this morning,i was driving my 1949 farmall m when the engine went BANG. it rattled a little and sounded like it metal rattling around inside it before i could pull over to shut it off. iuse this tractor every day so i need to fix this as soon as i can. how bad is this going to be once i start to brake it down? my first thought is that it threw a rod, am i on the right track?

Take the plugs out, put your finger over each plug hole and turn the crank slowly. The one with no compression ever is the one with the broke rod, if a rod is broken. If you hear a metal/metal noise when turning it over you have a valve hitting the piston, meaning a keeper came loose, or a spring broke. Theres alot that can go wrong.may have had an end cap on one rod come loose and the rod slipped off the crank. and when the piston came down it got smacked by the crank...it would be in the bottom of oil pan. If thats what happened, it would still run, just very poorly.

My bet would be a broken valve. An easy check for a broken rod is usually a nice big inspection hole in the side of the block. Pull out the plugs and crank the engine over use a peice of wire and see if the pistons are moving, if all are, not a rod.

Lots of possibilities, some more likely than others. If you had to shut it off, you almost certainly didn't break the cam or cam gear. One big bang, then missing out badly? Perhaps a broken rod or a valve through the head of a piston. Maybe it's not all that bad, though. I had my '49 M start making noise like a war had broken out in the midsection of the tractor. Turned out I'd lost one of the bolts in the coupler for the drive shaft that runs above the lift-all hydraulic pump. I'd check that before I dropped the pan on the engine, unless your'e SURE it's in the engine. Good luck!

Did it keep running after the bang? If it didn't, you might have broken a (cam?) gear in the front.

Might have dropped a valve.

I would say the top priority is to remove the oil pan and take a look. Sounds like a rod might have broken.
