Charging and Ampmeter on Cub Loboy

I'm showing the 6 volt generator putting out 7.0-7-2 volts at the regulator, but the ampmeter is not registering a positive output. The motion is dead center with a very slight wobble at zero. It does show a discharge with the light switch turned to high and low. I would like to see the charge rate move into postive. Any troubleshooting ideas that I should try?

Most likely the ammeter is wired up wrong - ie the wire from the regulator "BAT" terminal to the ammeter is connected to the wrong ammeter terminal. Verify by taking a voltage reading directly across the battery terminals with the engine running at speed. If you see 7.0 - 7.2 volt at the battery, then incorrect wiring is confirmed.

To fix, find the wire running from the regulator BAT terminal to the ammeter and switch it to the other ammeter terminal. For safety, disconnect the battery ground cable while swapping the connection!

Forgot to mention I checked the voltage across the battery, read around 6.3 to 6.4. Seems it may not be charging even though the regulator says it should be.?

OK - 6.4 volts at the battery says the battery is not being charged. Suspect then the problem is low generator output. It typically takes 8 to 9 volts to get the relay in the regulator to pull in, however your generator is only giving 7.5 volts open circuit - insufficient to activate the regulator.

You can test like this: Temporarily jumper together the GEN and BAT terminals at the regulator with the engine running at speed. If the ammeter now indicates charge the regulator is at fault. If still no charge, the problem is with the generator.

Post back what you find!

I'll check with a jumper this weekend and post back. Cleaning the commutator bars, and replacing the brushes didn't seem to increase the output. Incidentally, I have several Delco Remy generators for our D and KB International trucks to try, but they are much larger overall. The Cub generator is quite a bit smaller.

Another test you can try: Disconnect the wire from the generator ARM terminal and temporarily ground the FLD terminal (run a wire from the FLD terminal to a GOOD ground). Now run the engine at speed and measure the voltage at the ARM terminal. If the generator is good you will see 15 – 20+ volts between ARM and ground.

Note: A 6 volt truck generator can be installed on your Cub, but you must have the matching truck voltage regulator for it to work correctly. Also you may have to mess around changing pulleys to get the generator to spin at the proper RPM.

RR:

Click the link below. Then click on The Best of H.L. Chauvin. You won't find a topic specifically on charging problems, but most of the troubleshooting procedures will be found in the articles.

Also, you can click on the ATIS FAQ's as well, lots of info there as well as the schematics.

Ifn that still hasn't solved your problem, then I would suggest asking the guys at the Farmall Cub Forum and the ATIS Forum - both links can be gotten from the manual server below.

Hope this helps
