I have a 450d with factory ps, wide front, The ps doesn't work unless i pull one of the aux hyd valves and the 2 point lifts very slow. I've cleaned the screen and changed the fluid. There is a leak on the pressure line where it connects to the hyd controls, plowed snow for three hrs and didn't have to add fluid but, the trans cover got real slick. The 2 point ram broke about a month ago. I replaced it with one from a 300 parts tractor. The ps has been acting up since then. Hmmm... At the same time, I replaced a broken roll pin on the right spool valve d/s control. That should have improved the hyd...
Any ideas????
Thanks
Tom

I too had a 450 that I had problems with the power steering. I posted in this forum and had all kind of answers. Some right, some wrong. The problem is in the flow divider, you will find that the valves are worn. You can't get a kit or parts for them or even a new one. Don't try a used one because they probably are as bad as the one you have. What I did was come out of the flow divider(where your power hoses are) and put in a universal flow divider. You will have to do some pluming but my power steering works great.

I agree with the "Tractor Vet" - start with the flow divider. The fact that you must activate a aux. valve suggests that the pump is pushing all the fluid through the aux. circuit and back to tank. By actuating the valve, you are creating back pressure - forcing the fluid to go another direction (a.k.a. the power steering) Remember - the fluid will take the path of least resistance. Sometimes just taking a valve apart and cleaning it will solve the problem. The diverter may have a little dirt in it, causing it to stick. Not sure about the two point - are you sure the ram was good from the parts tractor?

Sounds like you blew out a small plug between the hydra touch valve , been years since i had to fix one and that is what happened to a buddys 450 D but it also could be the flow divider you are going to have to take something apart to find it so start with the flow divider firstthen start spliting the valve block apart this plug is between the valves .

This is just a guess, but I'm wondering if the regulator valve (where the pressure line from the steering motor connects) is blocked or damaged.

Bill
I was going through old posts on this board and found this:

:The flow control piston and/or the bore in the hyd. presure contol valve is worn. Then the oil bypasses the steering circuit. Almost all of the used valves are also worn out.

I wonder if the valve can be rebuilt good enough to get by or, does it need to be replaced?

Well, I rebuilt all three valves plus the regulator valve on my 400 back in October. As I recall, there isn't much to the regulator valve: a strong spring and a couple of pistons. The parts looked fine and all I did was replace the o-rings and gasket.

When reconsidering this problem, when you say you must activate a valve to work the steering, maybe this valve is screwed up as the "tractor vet" has mentioned. Take this valve out and see what you find inside.

I'm interested in knowing how you fix this problem because it could happen to me also. Stay in touch!

It doesn't matter which valve I pull to get the ps to work. Also when the valve is pulled the motor works harder. Inside the regulator there's an orifice that can be enlarged or plugged....
When it warms up a little I'll tear into it and see what's there
