I am rebuilding a 400 engine. I put the head on and torqued the studs, stripped one (upper threads) and a second one broke off in the block. Should a rebuild job also include replacing all the head studs?

I would ckeck your torque wrench for accuracy (you DO use one, don't you?); those bolts are good for several re-torquings unless they have been damaged earlier.

Yes we used a torque wrench. But now I'm paranoid. I ruined a good head gasket and don't want to have to buy a third one because I break more studs.

I don't think it is necessary to replace the studs, but on an engine of this age, it would be a good idea to remove the studs from the block so you can do a thorough examination.
