I am purchasing a farmall H with a Hi-Low range. It is not like a TA that can be shifted on the fly. you have to be stopped to switch. Is this an IH product or an Aftermarket product like an M&W or something like that?
Thanks

As per Larry, I have a '44 H that had a Heisler unit put in 1951, It has worked all these years trouble free. This made the H a great tractor on the roads moving loads.

Rusty Farmall is right. There was an inveterate tinkerer and machining genius named Harry Heisler who lived near Waterloo, Iowa back in the 1950s. He had several add-ons for tractors, but his "9 speed transmission" was very popular in that farming area (I grew up near him, but never knew him). His invention added a "hi-lo" lever and you ended up with 4 more gears between 4th and 5th. I drove a couple H Farmalls with this transmission...it worked great and was a fun thing to drive. He built a big house on his farm near Cedar Falls, IA, and it is still there.

I'm now having my dad's 1950 "H" restored. After 23 years I found it and bought it last summer. It's already going to be a costly thing, but worth every penny to tool down the road with it. Now I have to arrange to get it to Wisconsin this spring.

I need to find a good set of fenders for it.

I have a good set of fenders with extenders at Dubuque, Iowa. Need sand blasting and painting but are the original sheet metal thickness not reproductions. $225 at Dubuque, Iowa

Ooops. I said Rusty Farmall was right. "Carp" is the one who mentioned "Heisler".

That unit, when in high range, will also speed up the PTO. Be sure it is in low range before using any PTO driven equipment.

It is most likely am M&W 9 speed conversion. I believe that another company by the name of Heisler (sp) made something very similar as well.

How is it a 9 speed. Wouldn't it be a ten speed since you have 1-5th gear?? what gear doesn't it work with?

These units give 2 speeds on the countershaft. You get 5th gear when mainshaft and imputshaft are locked together and this doesn't change with 9 speed units.

Steve is right. Since 5th is direct, the extra set of gears doesn't effect it. The M&W kit gives you 4 additional speeds that range in between the speed of 4th and 5th gear. It also gives you a faster reverse.
