Future Farmer's of America.

I was in it for two weeks, the other people didn't want me in it and it wasn't worth fighting over so I quit.

That's to bad. May I ask why they didn't want you in it? I remember when I was a green hand in it and the upper classmen in high school put us through all the initiation excersizes as they called it. But it all boiled down to the upper classmen picking on the freshman type deal. We got our hands painted green and some stuff like that, that our adviser knew about. But then there was getting your shop coveralls stolen, and getting beat up in the bathroom, and getting your shop project tampered with that the shop teacher/FFA adviser didn't know about. You kept your mouth shut too or it would be worse. Those upper classmen were also pretty clicky about who ran for offices which didn't bother me much since I didn't want to be an officer. I didn't think to much of that kind of conduct, so when I was a Senior I just left the greenhands alone. Anyways, I sure hate to here you didn't get accepted because a couple of my better memories was FFA related.

I guess they just didn't want in, I was just an out cast that nobody wanted anything to. When I was in school the non-FFA members would herrass the FFA members by asking them if they were a farmer or f**** (please excuse the language)

There are different levels of degree's in FFA for members to work towards. There are: Greenhand,
Chapter, Iowa (the state I'm from, each state puts it's own name in here)and National.
There are different requirements to receive these degrees. To even be in the running to get one you must have an SAE (Supervised Agriculture Experience, fancing term for project) and you must make a certain amount of money with your SAE or spend a certain amount of time on it. Accurate records must be kept. My SAE is Ag mechanincs, repair and restoration so my project is working on tractors. I have received the first 2 degrees and am working on my Iowa Degree. Your SAE is one of several requirements for the degrees. Other kids restoring them for FFA might be doing it to enter them into restoration contest.

I go to a smaller school where there is between 350-400 kids in HS in which 98 of them are in FFA. There is a large number of females in it nation wide. 5 of our 6 officers are females. We are a very active chapter and FFA is a big part o the community.

Alot of good things said here. FFA is a Nation wide organization that is mainly geared up for high school kids. Used to stand for Future Farmers of America, but as said already, I think they dropped the wording and just go by FFA. The Ag industry has gotten so broad and wide, and the number of farmers keeps going down due to bigger operations and corporate farming, that I believe that the organization has opened its arms to anybody remotely close to ag related interests and not just farm kids. I was in the FFA in the early 90's, and I could see non-farming kids at that time showing interests in the FFA just in our local chapter. Maybe it was originally designed for farm kids, but has kind of headed toward the ag industry direction involving young people with those interests. As a rule of thumb, the organization is probably more popular in rural areas.

I am currently in the FFA, and according to the book, FFA doesn't stand for Future Farmers of America. It says that in 1992 I think that they stopped using that term because people that were not farmers were becoming interested in the program, so they stopped using that term. Right now, I am restoring an Oliver 88 for my FFA tractor restoration contest.

Farmall Daddy, You are correct in that essentially since 1988 The "Future Farmers of America" was changed to the "National FFA orginization"

The FFA used to stand for Future Farmers of America, now it is the the letters. It supports Ag and ag related busines. It is im most high schools and there is an alumini association for those of us out of high school. It is a very big and good organization. Here in Michigan You can even have a license plate promoting it.

SC, if you know where your Grandfather went to High School, and the school still exists, then I would bet that the FFA chapter also exists. Even though the School may be in the city, there are a lot of rural students that attend and Vo Ag is as intregal part of that education system as Home Ec, and other vocational studies. I would be interested in knowing what you can turn up.

Im in FFA at my HS. Ive been in it for 4 years, and am signed up for 3 years post graduation for the Farmall Project.
My school has the largest FFA/AG program in the state of florida. We always win the state competitions, and usually place near the top in the national events. There is Tractor Driving
Cattle Judging
Meat Judging Land Judging
Vegetable judging
Parlementary Procedure team

And alot more. We get like 6 NEW John Deere Tractors each year. 2 Big jobs, where the tires are about 6 feet tall, then 3 medium (1) (4WD), and a little one for bushhogging. The kids see John Deere reliablilty, go home to the farm and tell daddy about it, and daddy goes and buys one...so JD gets something out of it.

Thats where I got my Farmall C, in 2-3 years when Im done, Ill enter it in the Tractor restoration contest.

Tommy, Where in Fla are you? I graduated from So. Dade HS, In Homestead Fla, and our Ag Dept grew vegtables that supplied the cafeterias in all the other Dade County Schools. We had a plant nursury in addition to the land we planted Potatoes, Pole beans, Sweet corn, Okra, Onions, Tomatoes, and a few other things. One guy even tried to raise tobacco but the kabash was put to that idea. (wonder what the samy guy would have tried to raise in this day and age, Hmmmmm. Each student that planted a plot was responsible to keep a journal listing his expenses, the variety of seed and fertilizer used, labor costs, fuel costs and any other expense involved, He was then expected to show a profit even tho the Ag Dept sponsored each student.

Im in Pensacola.

We have an acre or so that the classes grow corn, potatos, okra, cabbage, Turnip greens, Mustard greens, Eggplant, tomatoes, and squash and zuchinni squash.

We major in Cattle. We have 1 bull, around 20 cows, and some calves, which 75% get sold, the rest are kept.
We do pretty good, in some 35 years, we've only lost 3 calves.
This year we sold the bull, we'll get a new one soon.

SC, FFA stands for Future Farmers of America. It was established in 1928 as a spin off from FFV which originated in Virginia. It provides leadership for High School Students involved in Vocational Ag. Their members are readily recognized with their blue corduroy jackets with corn yellow insignia along with chapter name embroided. They are probably the only orginization to faithfully employ the use of parimentary proceedure at all meetings. In fact they hold seminars on the subject. You can log on to their web-site and learn more than I can paraphrase here.

Future Farmers of America,Here at least it starts at about 9th grade in schools, similar to 4H. Projects are varried for different people and different areas. When I was in FFA I had projects in crops, livestock and custom work.

I became a Jr. Member in seventh grade must have been in 1954. I was raised on a small dairy and hog farm. The hogs were registered Durocs and I started showing at a local FFA show in 1954.

There were indeed crossover projects or initiatives between FFA and 4H, such as live stock raising, Mechanical machinery maintainence, Horticulture, just to name a few. FFA comes under the auspices of the Educational system, while 4H is an extension of the County Agricultural Dept. Both are open to both boys and girls, both promote quality of life whether rural or urban.
