M Problem - Brakes?

I posted this at Red Power. Thought I'd post it here, too. Need all the advice I can get.

I have a problem with my M. When it sits awhile, it seems like the brakes somehow lock up. I've got it parked at a friend's place while we do some work on it. He went to move it out of the way this morning and it wouldn't move right away. One side came loose first and soon after that the other side broke loose, too. It was about 0 degrees this morning. It seems to do this in milder weather, too. Any advise or explainations would be most welcome. Marv Gustafson

Replace the brake bands. The bands you have have small metal particles in then that rust to the drums.I have a W-4 that did the exact same thing. The bands had been changed at some point in its lifetime and the bands that were on it had small flakes of metal made into them. They would rust and would stick to the drum.Took them off and had them relined with a non-metallic type material, havent stuck since. It had gotten so bad that I wouldnt set the brakes when I parked it,just put it in gear and left it.

Sounds like you got some water in the rear end. It'll freeze and hang up your bull gears solid. Thaw it out and LOOSEN the drain plug and let the water seep out, then tighten 'er up again. Good luck! Mguy.

I had the rear end freeze up problem, too. I've taken care of that. I'm pretty sure it's the brakes

I had\have the same problem with my 52 m, it sat at grandpas shed for 7 years not moving and the brakes siezed up. I have disc brakes on mine, so i undid the 5 bolts on the brake casing and cleaned up the plates and balls and it worked fine. now since grandpa passed away we have our farmalls home. The m sat in the rain and water got into the brakes and they started to get stuck, so i put some pen oil in the top and have not had a probablem since. if you have disc brakes this may help.

Good comment. When I first read the concern I immediately thought that the tractor has disc brakes. I have a 52 M with disc brakes that I also had to take apart, clean and lube with lithium grease the ramps and balls. Then they worked as well as disc brakes can work. Marv, do you have disc brakes?

It might well be water in the rear end. better check it out. Otherwise it is moisture and rust in the brakes themselves. guess you know what o do about that.
