We have an M farmall that only fires on front two cylinders. We have replaced plugs, wires, coil, distributor, set the valves and checked the compression on all four cylinders.( same on all) This engine ran fine about 3 years ago but froze up before we could get around to restoring it. We had to remove piston number 4 and replace rings and clean up sleeve. We did not mess with internal timing (cam & crank) so I can't think of anything else that would effect two cylinders the same way. Any advise would be helpful. Thanks!!!!

Harvey, take a propane torch or acetylene torch, unlit and hold it around the manifold, running the tip around all parts of the manifold, with the tractor running if it smooths out and starts to fire on all 4 you will need all you need to know about your manifold. Mike in Exeter Ontario

A couple of things to check - do you have the normal compression on those two cylinders and is there evidence of gas in them when you pull the spark plugs. Besides the other good ideas below if the tractor has been sitting awhile there could be a valve stuck open and that would show up on a compression check.

No big deal! Allot of us have tractors that run on 2 cylinders. Were called John Deere guys, and even have our own 2 cylinder clubs.

john deere only made 2 cylinder engines because they couldn't make a four cylinder run. Had to wait for a new generation of engineers before they could design a four cylinder. Up to that point john deere was only half the tractor farmal was.

Hi Harvey,

When two adjacent cylinders are malfunctioning, this, more often than not, will point to something those two particular cylinders have in common.

This brings to mind three things: Intake, head gasket and firing order sequence.

Hope you get 'er figured out,

Allan

I seems to me that you may have a manifold leak. Spray some WD40 arount the intake for the two cylinders that aren't firing with the tractor running and see if it hits then.

you could have two plug wires in the wrong holes.recheck dist.rotation and firing order.

Well you could have the valves on 3and 4 not seatting or at times i have found a bad dist cap has given me fits and i am talken a new factor one wright out of the box. or it could be and air leak on the manifold and i have seen them leak on the inside where they have rusted thru or cracked this is a hard one to find just some thoughts as i am not there to check it out.
