Farmall 140 Questions

My dad and I own a 1964 Farmall 140. It has a one point fast hitch. We have recently added an auxillary hydraulic valve to operate a rear mounted hydraulic port that will operate a gopher poisioning machine. The damn gophers are eating the roots of my sugar maples! How much additional hydraulic fluid should I add? What can I do about adding front weight to the tractor that already has front wheels weights?
Thanks!

Kirk: Unless you add an extra resovoir not much way to add extra hydraulic oil. The only way you can add resovoir is place a tank above current resovoir and let it gravety feed into current system through fill plug. The added resovoir will need to be vented.

On the front weight, I rather doubt you need any. The fast hitch will not lift enough weight, to prevent tractor from handling it quite well. I have a 60 gallon sprayer, my hitch will lift when empty. However with 600 lbs water added it will not lift the sprayer full. I have chains I put on hitch to carry weight when spraying, the main reason is to prevent breakage of hitch linkage or hydraulics when spraying. The full sprayer weighs aprox. 800 lbs. and I have no problem without weights. I don't even have wheel weights, although my cultivator lift frames and tool bar are usually on tractor. They probably weigh 200 lbs. but are substancially behind front axle.

Hugh, thanks for your response and insight. Another question for you. The auxillary valve has two outlets; one forward and the other rearward. Does it matter what outlet I attach the hydraulic hose to for use with a single action cylinder? When I bought the valve, it appeared that the forward outlet was/had been in use while the rearward outlet still had its plug in it. Does it matter which outlet on the valve I use?

If you have an open center two way valve, it will work as a single acting valve if one port is plugged. However, on the down cycle, the inlet from the pump will be blocked and will load the pump. This could be bad on a 140, as I don't think the pump has an internal relief valve and the pump or drive gears could be damaged. I think on a 140, the relief valve is internal to the Touch Control Unit. If your remote is piped in such a way that the relief can't function when the remote is activated you best not pipe as a one way valve. You could install a relief valve in the line from the pump to avoid over pressure and resulting excess stress on the pump system.

Kirk: The remote valve I have is double action, so I need two hoses. I am not right up on the single , although I have seen them. I would say try it as it appears to have been used. Your not going to hurt anything by trying.

Another item if you are using single hose and action cylinders, you will most definately need extra resovoir. The dual hose systems even if they are not dual action can utilize other end of cylinder as a resovoir.
