Splitting an I-404

Happy New Year!

Well it looks like we're going to have to take the engine out of an I-404. The front-end is connected to the transmission, but it doesn't look strong enough to support the tractor without the engine in. I was thinking of blocking the wheels well, then putting a heavy jackstand support under where the transmission connects to the front-end. Then taking the engine out.

How does that sound?

Set a jack under the clutch housing, just barely take the weight from the front wheels.(Leave them touching the floor), disconnect everyting up front and remove the front wheels, leaving the engine suspended in mid air. If you don't have a good engine stand, this is a good time to nearly dissasemble the engine. If you have to remove the front pulley, don't try to drive it off. It always breaks. Use a puller. But I don;t understand why I should disconnect the front end. The front-end is connected to the transmission (independently from the engine) by some long heavy bars that bolt to the bellhousing. If I pull the engine, the front-end and transmission are still connected... although it would be weak without a heavy jackstand.
I'm not argueing your reasoning, just trying to understand it. Please reply.

Although you can see that the front axle yoke is attached to the torque tube housing, the front of the engine is also attached to the steering bolster that supports the front side of the front axle and radiator. Do it like that man said and it will be a snap. Might want to get an I&T manual for this model before you start. They are on e-bay all the time or at the local farm and home store. It will give you step by step instructions.

Ok, I just went out with a flashlight and looked it over. I think I see what you're talking about. We have a manual on order, but it hasn't arrived yet.
I appreciate the advice. That's the reason I asked for it, because it looked like I could do it my way but thought I better check with those who might've done a time or two before.
All the cylinders are froze and rusted up. I put some molasses in each one (filled it up to the top of the sleeves), but I don;t know if it's going to help. A friend said to do that to help break-down some of the rust before we tried removing the pistons.
