I have an 856D with a good running DT407 in it that i'd like to put a DT466 in. I'd like to do a little pulling with this tractor and may want more than 200HP down the road, witch is the reason for the engine swap. Different ones I've talked to "THINK" it will bolt right in, but none of them have done it. I have not looked at a 466 yet to do any measuring. I also wondered whether an engine from a tractor/combine or truck would be better. Would the sheet metal have to be changed or lengthened?

What is a DT407 with 7,600 total hrs and approx. 2,500 hrs on a major worth?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance, KP

Thanks for all your input fellows. I'll have to sort thru this and give it more thought. Maybe I should just get a turbo, pump and injectors out of a 1256 and put in it and see what happens.

We have some local people that put a 466 block into a 766 chassis and put a narrow front and 20.8-38 tires on it. My cousin and one of his buddies both have 1066's with the regular 414 block in them and are otherwise equipped the same as the competing 766. With only a few turns of the screw both of the ten's with the smaller block walk all over the 766 at just about every pull and are more consistent in their placing. I'm by no means trying to say that a 466 is not a good way to go, I just think it show's that "bigger isn't always better". I cannot speak for the 766, but both 10's are also farmed with.

It's a lot easier just to go buy a good 1486 then mickymouse it together , but i am getting lazy in my old age . Buy the time ya buy the engine and frame rails a flywheel out of a 966 and all the rest of the work and after you are done and put it in the field you will find out that the small clutch won't last long.

Theirs a few of us in western Iowa have put them in.Two way's to do it.Use 66 side rails &motor plate on rear, need to make cross over pipe on bottom rad.hose ,longer hood I used 560 hood cut to fit. Also change throtle linkage to left side, fuel lines too .Air filter rigt side inlet for turboed engine.Flywheel&clutch off 1066.On mine wanted it to look more stock used old frame rails and lenghend the them narrowed the front motor plate on the 466 engineto fit the narrower 56 frame bored new holes in 56 frame for front motor plate bolts. It's doable.

You can over 200 HP out of a 402, 1206SWMO who posts on here had one, he can tell you what was done to his. There is a thread on the Red Power Forum right now that has a story about his tractor.

I was told to put a DT414 in our 1256 (DT407 stock) would require the frame rails, flywheel, clutch, etc. from a 66 or 86 series tractor. There may be more needed - like throttle linkages, etc...

You need the bellhousing adapter from a Newer Hydro 186? series tractor.. I belive the hydros were like the older 1026 Hydro,, I may be off here about the design,, but the bell housing for those rear ends have the 361-407 bell housing bolt pattern, then, the plate that bolts onto the engine has the 414 and 466 block bolt pattern, along with the bellhousing pattern of the 856-1456. Hope this helps,, ChadS
