I have two Farmall M tractors that leak oil from the top of the oil filter canister at the copper washer. I have put new copper washers on and even doubled the washers. I cannot stop the slow drip from the top. I do not want to keep tightening or I may have a major mess. Do any of you have any ideas or solutions on stopping the leaks?

Thanks

Cheg, I bought a package of those little rubber washers that go into a waterhose nozzle or faucet. The worked great on my M.

U can take some fishing line and wind it around the bolt at the top where it contacts the can and that will work in a pinch

I tapped the shell top back out and then brazed a thick washer to the top of it. Then took it down to the local machine shop and had him put it on the laythe to square it off. Works good now.

Cheg, The normal school of thought is that if you tighten something enough, you will stop it from leaking. Not necessarily so. With the brass compression washers, (actually gaskets) you can over tighten them. Your "H" has several. The oil filter canister has one, the valve cover has two, the right hand jacket cover on the engine block has two, and if I'm not mistaking, the oil pan may have them. In each case, if you over tighten, you will create more leaks than you cure. When you install one, snug it up only until it stops seeping and maybe a budge past tht and no more.

Cheg, I had the same problem on my H while it was running a bale elevator, I didn't have a lot of time that day so I cut a circle out of an old piece of inner tube, punched a hole in it and put it on in place of the copper gasket, come to think of it , its still there...NAPA has gaskets for oil pan plugs which are a combo copper and rubber..they will work good....Mike in Exeter Ontario

I used a washer from Home Depot, It is rubber on one side and the other side is a steel washer If you have a home Depot in your area you can find them in the special fastners sections. They work great for valve cover studs also,

Don't know ---IH made two washers, one to engine serial 59393, one after.
