I got the trans tore down today. Only 2 gears have missing teeth. The 2nd 3rd sliding gear and the constant mesh gear.
What do you guys think about these gears? No teeth are missing but looks kind of worn and some pitting.Alo on the 4th/5th sliding gear there is some evedence of gear grinding on the part that is in line with the main shaft. If you know what I am talking about?
Just in case some of you are interested in all this trans bruhaha. I have updated my web site.

Kelly: Happy to see you so far along on your tractor. I've got an H and an M I would love to go over but I havn't the time or the money, and we use them too often to really let them sit idle for so long. As for the gears, My opinion is the gears in the picture tell me that this is a "tired" tranny, and I've torn quite a few down that look like that. I definately would change any that show that much wear! This should do wonders for you shifting ability when you have the beast back together. As for the 4/5th gear, I asumme you are talking about the internal teeth which mesh with your T.A. output shaft. First check your T.A. output shaft and make sure it is not worn. Eve though it is rebuilt I myself have rebuilt a few which had more wear than I would have liked, but sometimes you lose track of what is ideal. The output shaft teeth should have a nice, uniform U-shape to them. Exessive wear starts to look like a flat side to the U. As far as the 4/5th gear use your gut and the condition of the rest of the tranny gears to tell you what you should do. Just by looking at you picture, those gears tell me that, unless the 4/5th gear has been changed previuosly, then it is due.

Thank you.
The 4th / 5th gear is the one that meshes with the main shaft coming from the TA. I had looked at a couple that were in tractors that are in the junk yard and thiers were in better shape.
I found a guy in Idaho that will sell me all 5 gears for $200 + shipping. So I better get them wile I have her apart.
Speaking of prices. I had put a add in the classifieds for the gears and was supprised at the range of prices I got. From $150 each down to $25 but only had one of them.

Kelly, When you replace the gears, Try ger a complete set from another tractor. My reasoning in this is from an incident many yrs ago my Dad bought an ol H that 4 th gear was out of it. After numerious times of taking the trans apart and putting it back together again. Dad and I couldn't get a very loud whine out of it. We shipped it to the parts yard. It was no where near a perfect tractor. It had been " Rode hard....and Put up very wet! Anyway, My $.02.
Good Luck,
John A.

It all depends, personally if I was in that far and had it apart, new gears on anything questionable. If the 4th/5th sliding gear shows evidence of grinding it could be just a step away from jumping out of 5th.

Just my opinions... famous last words the last time I fixed my snowmobile, "if only I would have had the time to do it right the first time..."
