I was replacing the PTO seal and had it flush with the outside and noticed a leak. The new seal was not the same thickness as the original so I was wondering if I need to drive it till tight. I'd hate to pull it out again. When this is accomplished does it get filled with 90 wt. gear oil? Is there a way to check the level of the fluid..I noticed a screw under the PTO lever and wondered if that was a weep hole?

Charles, the new seals are about 1/3 as thick as the original seal. The original seal that I removed out of mine was about 1 18" thick. I used three of the new ones to replace the original. These are CR seals (Chicago Rawhide) IH part #48114 D The CR part # is CR 13865, which should be available at your local auto parts store. Since the new ones are single lipped seals I figure more is better. The Screw you see on the right side below the shifter lever is the Poppett and spring that holds the PTO shift lever engaged

I took the threaded "bolt" with the screw head out and stuck my screw driver in it and it did not hit anything. The PTO shift appears to be working fine. The threaded bolt looked like it had gear oil on the back of it. I guess I'll put five quarts of gear oil in it and see if anything runs out of it, (once I get the seal taken care of) ..Charlie

Charles: The seals on my tractors, Super A and 130 are flush with outside case. On 140 the seal recessed in a bit. Just went to shop and checked. The transmission level for 90W gear oil is a plug on side of transmission case near front tip of left fender and just below it. It is almost directly behind rod going to left brake. These hold 5 quarts. I always run my tractors just a bit above that level. I have an old car engine dipstick I use and add about 1". I find those transmissions run a lot more quiet.
