M smokes and fouls plugs. black smoke when i pull the thottle open, then mostly gray. The motor looks like it has been recently overhauled and seems to have real good compression. I did not check it but the plugs were all black so I can rule out a bad cylinder. I can fiddle with the fuel screw all day but can't change it. Thinking maybe I just have poor gas or the previous owner put oil in the gas. Other thought is that the float might be set to high but I tryed turning the gas off at the tank and no change. Any other ideas before I drain the tank?

I just ran into the same thing with a M carb. I had the carburator apart at least 6 times trying to figure out why it was flooding. For some unknown reason, the float was catching on the carburator housing not allowing the needle valve to shut the fuel off. I bent the float out so it would not catch the housing. The flooding stopped and tractor has ran great since.

I learned that after the carburator is assembled, turn it over a couple times and make sure you hear the float moving freely inside.

My M was doing that,I did two things.Reset the float, which was set by the book, but Iguess due to wear on the pin or the peice the pin goes into ws throwing it off,so I set it a little higher than it was suppose to be.That helped alot, but what really helped was using a hotter plug.

The float may need to be reset, it may not be sticking or leaking but that does not mean it is correct. When you have no adjustment at the screws I would think that the gasoline is flowing over the float and choking the tractor. Shutting off the fuel supply will not compensate for the float and it will flood the tractor until it stalls out with no fuel. I'd start there..... ...Mike in Exeter Ontario

I realy hate to argue mike but you CAN regulate the fuel with the shut off.

Does it happen to have a live hydraulic pump?

It did have a live pump but I took it off cuz it was leaking. The crankcase is not overfull, I don't think. Maybe I better check closer.

Is the float stuck or needle & seat not closing?
Something is strange if you turn off the fuel tank and the engine still runs. It takes about a minute or so to use up the fuel in the carb and line.
Does it continue to run even then??

The float must be sealing because it does not leak when not running. Yes the tank shutoff is working.

Nebraska Cowman,
Had and have a simular issue with my SMTA. Missing, low power and fouling plugs. Local old iron guru sayes: "...run higher octane fuel, and it'll run clean" By golly, as long as I run the mid grade fuel, my SMTA purr's and snorts like it ought. Perhaps a different plug would impact this. But I have enough trouble getting the Champion's locally, so I stick with them.
