I have New Year's Day off and want to change the hydraulic filter on an IH 756 (gas engine). I need some basic how to information on changing the filter. I stopped at the IH Dealer and got the filter and some fluid as I anticipate losing some. Also when I check the hydraulic fluid level does the fluid need to cold, warm or hot?
Any information would be appreciated. Happy New Year.

You wouln't lose more than a gallon when you remove the filter. It sounds like you forgot to get the big o-ring that seals the cover. Sometimes you can get away with reusing the old one. Rinse off the metal bypass screen with a little gas or diesel fuel. I've never used a large bolt or nut to hold the filter in position while installing the cover, but there is no reason why you can't. Check fluid level after you get the new filter in, start the engine, you will notice that the system is airlocked. Move the control valve levers back and forth until you have steering and brakes. Turn the steering all the way to the left and all the way to the right a few times. Run the three point hitch down and back up a few times. Make sure your o-ring isn't leaking. Shut down the engine and re-check the fluid level.

Don't be shocked if you take the old filter out and find a big bolt or nut or some thing laying in the bottem of the filter housing a lot of people do this to hold the filter in place until you get the cap back on.

I always unbolt the whole cover rather than the 2 wing nuts on the cap and then have to worry aobut the o-ring messing up. Be careful either way you take the filter cover off

Yeah, but then you have to worry about scraping every little piece of old gasket off to ensure the new gasket will seal, plus it takes a heck of a lot longer to do. That's why they went to the o-ring and two wing nuts after the 06 series.

if possible park with the right side of the tractor high- lose less fluid that way. as for fluid temp when checking, not really sure. there is a large area between full and low, with a mark on the stick for the one gallon to go point.
