Can you increase amps from generator on a WR9

I have replaced the bulbs in the head and tail lights with sealed beam units, but now the amp gauge shows discharge when they are all turned on. Generator (6 volt) puts out about 2 amps on low and about 8 on high. Does not have a regulator, but controlled by a cut out.

Any way to increase the output with the stock generator?

Roger

If yours has a cut-out the gen probably has the third brush adjustable move it closer and it will put out more amps keep 3.5 bars between brushes. Mite want to replace the brushes and clean the commutator up also is the lite sw wired correct and good ground everyplace?

RAR,
Most generators do 20 or so amps tops. You can get 6 volt alternators that will do 30 to 40 amps, though.

Check the RC or reserve capacity rating on your battery. It's the amount of time it can drain at and still produce nominal voltage. Should give you an idea of how much use you can stretch out of it with your current setup. If you're using the lights for 1 hour versus 4, 5 or more hours of no light running (meaning charging time) you could probably save yourself the hassle and expense of an alternator.

I believe I can solve the problem with Bob's response below. It discharges only about 2 to 3 amps. The increased output should also brighten the lights.

Thanks for your response. Happy New Year.

Roger - The generator's max output can be changed by repositioning the "3rd brush" in the generator. The adjustment is easily made with the generator on the tractor:

Remove the generator dust band and look inside for the 3rd brush. It will be the brush that doesn't have a mate exactly 180 deg opposite on the commutator. Now look for a long, slotted head screw on the outside end of the generator near the 3rd brush. Loosen the screw a couple turns - this will unclamp the 3rd brush holder. Next carefully rotate the brush holder CLOSER to the nearest fixed brush, but leave 3 commutator bars showing between the two brushes. Finally tighten the clamp screw and you are done. Your generator will now be set at maximum output and should deliver somewhere between 12 and 16 amps at full RPM.
