I keep my 340 with a six volt system out at the home place. I need to go out and plow snow with it in the evening or on weekends. Seems when ever I go out there the battery wont start the tractor without first putting it on the charger for an hour or so. Battery was new 2 years ago, starts good when warmed up. Has anyone tried one of these trickle chargers for lawn tractors/atv's? I don't leave it on the regular charger because I don't know when I can get back out there and don't want to burn it up. If you already have a charger, why not just buy a timer that plugs into the oulet. That way you can plug the charger into the timer and set the time the charger will come on and when it will go off. I think they are pretty cheap and can get them at the local Walmart.

a Battery Tender by Deltran is what you need. I have a 5 year old battery on my Ford 2N, and many of the batteries on my antique motorcycles are at least that old and they all work fine. As a matter of fact, I set some of my stuff to not charge at all, because most of those old systems will boil a battery dry. At the end of the day, just hook up the Tender, and you are back in business.

There is one othe trick you can use, but not nearly as good. I did this before I had a tender. Plug your big charger into your outlet light on an electric garage door opener. They usually power an outlet for 5 minutes or so after opening or closing the door. This way you won't overcharge. For a tractor kept in teh garage, this works great.

Take Care

Putter,
Those smart tender chargers do come in 6volts. Here's a link below. They are 30 to 50 bucks, and only charge at 750 to 1250 mils. You might be able to do nearly the same job with a 6volt wall wart transformer that produces 700 to 800 mils.

I've used smart chargers with NiCd's, but never a lead acid battery. They work fairly well, but as the chemistry is different in your tractor battery, it's not as fussy as a nickel cad. So I'd try the wall wart route first.

I have a '45 H still with a 6 volt system. They make the Tender in a 6 volt unit. Had mind for about a year now. Keeps the battery right up. Still of course need to have wires, starter right up to snuff!

Click on the link to go to their site.

There is an automatic charger called a Battery Tender, but I think that they are for 12V systems. Greg
