What is the rule of thumb or starting point for adjusting the load screw on an H carburator. Is it about three turns out? My H has a lot of fuel smoke when you idle it down after full throttle. Seems like it's running to rich. To adjust it can I open the throttle to full and just set the screw until it runs the best?

On the angled high speed screw at the bottom, I set full rpm and slowly turn it in until the RPM starts to drop off. Then I open it back up 1/2 turn for summer weather, or 3/4 turn for colder weather. Roughly 2 1/2 turns.

There is a separate idle mixture screw that sticks out horizontally towards the top of the lower 1/2 of the carburetor body with the head pointing towards the governor assembly. With that one, set your RPM at idle and fiddle with it until you get the best idle RPM. Most of mine are about 1 turn out.

Thanks for the input. I went back and looked through the archives and got a lot of good info too. This old H has been giving me fits. If its not smok'in black its surging. Its probably something simple. I'll try it again doing it like you suggested. If I still don't have it right I think I'll check the timing.

Paul describe to me what you mean by surging. Is your RPM varying at a given throttle setting?
