I wanted to ask what experiences people on this forum have had using NAPA parts. Are these parts generally good quality? Have people had good luck with these parts?

The reason I ask is that the nearest CIH dealer is 60 miles away and I need to get rear axle seals for a SMTA. I might also be looking at axle bearings (I'll know more once I get the wheels off). Anyhow, it's not very convenient to travel that distance if you need a part quickly.

Thanks for your responses.

Chad

Chad I work for a Bumper to Bumper D C Just remember most any auto parts places have two grades of parts the good stuff and it will cost more and then they have junk. I am lucky enough to get a good discount, but I always ask my boss now Gary just which one would you use in your car. Same goes for seals and bearings.

we have a place here that specializes in older equipment parts, and a place called erie bearings co., so I dont think we've ever got parts at napa, but if erie bearing cant find a bearing or a seal, by cross-ref or measuring it and looking it up that way, chances are no one will have it.

I am probably 15o miles from my IH dealer, they UPS me everything or if not in stock, UPS it directly from the depot. That being said, I was doing the PTO outer seal on my H, I ended up ruining it. It was a Chicago Rawhide from IH. Called the local Napa with the CR #, they delivered me 2 (Just in case I screwew up again) within 20 minutes. On the other hand, they couldn't cross reference the seal on the upper bolster pivot shaft, I believe it was a National.

I have bought engine gasket kits for Farmalls, through NAPA,, they are cheaper than some of the IH dealers, and others who sell them. The NAPA I go through is in Rochester, Indiana, Bought a cyl head gasket kit a few weeks ago for a 806,, cost about 55 dollars. Not to bad!! ChadS

I really can't speak to the issue of the quality of NAPA parts. I haven't noticed any particular problem there. The problem I have--and it is present at both the NAPA sources close to my home--is that the people working the counter seem utterly incompetent. One has to be exceedingly careful that they come away with the right part--that is if the attendants are able to find anything at all. I can't imagine how they find their way home at night. I have better luck with some of the kids that staff the various local dicount auto part shops. It doesn't sound like anyone else's experience, but NAPA is a choice of last resort for me.

NAPA in my opinion has very good quality parts. I had their machine shop rebuild an H head. Price was right and the quality was excellent. The store out in Brownsburg, just west of Indianapolis, specializes in many Farmall parts.

I have purchased many seals, belts & bearings from NAPA and have had good luck. I just bought a fan belt for my M there yesterday. Works great.

Chad,

I actually drive past my IH dealer to get my parts at NAPA. They have good quality parts and I have used them for years with no problem.

So far they have provided me with all the bearings and seals I needed, plus ignition items, thermostat, carburator kit, and they even relined my brake bands.

Since I am rebuiding rather than restoring my H, I plan to purchase my gauges there also.

If you have no need to have "IH" stamped on your part, then you and your wallet should be happy at NAPA.

Good luck,
Fred - Kansas

I have the same problem here, nearest IH dealer about 60 miles away. I have used NAPA parts on both IH and JD. I got wheel bearings for the JD for a bout 1/2 price of the same bearing at JD. The problem with seals is that IH usually has their number on them. I got one for my TA housing from NAPA but they measured it and ordered accordingly. It turned out to be a lot lighter seal so I got the correct one from IH. On the other side of that I ordered a seal last year for my IPTO from IH and that seal was a lot lighter than the old one. On small stuff my IH dealer will ship to me but I have had great luck with NAPA overall.

Chad - I've had good luck with NAPA. However I've had excellent luck purchasing seals, bearings, etc for my Farmall tractors (and also my MM tractor) from my local Kaman Industrial distributor. Kaman has branches across the US. They can cross reference IHC part numbers to industry standard seals and bearings. They provide quality parts at cost equal or less than CIH. Often the parts are in stock - if not they get them in a day or two.

Note - I'm in no way associated with Kaman other than as a satisfied customer...

Chad, If NAPA can cross-reference to the IH part number exactly, the seals and bearings you would get from NAPA will be the same as what you would get from IH. I don't think you would be sacrificing quality as you would in some other areas. You just have to know exactly what you want because odds are that NAPA or any other automotive parts outlet will not have an IH parts manual, only a cross-reference to a particular part number.

Chad; I work at my local NAPA store and we can cross reference any IH seal number. The only difference in the quality of the seal from NAPA or IH is the manufacture of the seal. There are only a couple manufactures left. National or Chicago Rawhide, We deal with Chicago Rawhide. Hope this will help you out. Chris
