thanks guys you may be right, I never thought of that, thanks for the info, I have 2 of these h's the one with the X1 is in pieces , but it does not have the hole in the hood so it is correct .. I dont know the yr of this one yet,, but I have another one that believe is a 1946 serial # 233591,, this one has a tank and a hole for the other fuel, but I dont believe it is hooked, there appears to be no valve on the bottom of this small tank, and once in a while water comes out,, thanks all pat

X1 Denotes the tractor was equiped with a gasoline engine. X3, for example, would indicate kerosene. Guy Fay has a list of these in his book, FARMALL Letter Series Tractors.

The X1 at the end of serial number I believe indicates that the tractor was equiped with a gasoline engine from factory. The H was also available with a kerosene and a distillate engine. The kero's and distillate's had a little different head, manifold, (jets) in carb, extra reserve gas tank, and radiator shutters. They also had an extra hole in the hood to fill the little reserve gas tank that was under the hood, right side in front of main fuel tank. Check it out, I bet the hood doesn't have the hole unless the hood has been changed.
