I just removed the fan assembly from my 1940 A, and found the shaft to be really sloppy. I disassembled everything, and found a brass bushing. I have checked the parts manuals but don't see anything on a bushing. Is there a replacement, and if so, what is the IH parts number. Hugh, where are ya when I need ya, eh..

Yo Paul,

Why not make one, out of a brass or copper pipe!!
Maybe the bushing out of an old starter. No, I suppose that would be too small. Weeeell, i'm only trying to help. :>)

Thanx, FD

You are lucky in some respects to have the fan that comes apart. I have had the same problem on my A. The fix was to get another brass bush and get it machined and fitted. This has got to be way cheaper than a whole new assembly. From memory 65mm was about right. Stephen

I don't think the bushing is original. Someone must have had it made. Originally, just a machined fit between the shaft and the hub. I don't think IH makes these parts anymore. They have been replaced by an assembly that has a ball bearing. If you want to stay original, you will have to rework what you have, or get parts from a salvage dealer or you may luck up and find some new old stock parts. Easiest is to just buy a new fan assembly. These are available from lots of after market suppliers.

Fan & shaft for Super A, $75.00, made in Taiwan, purchased in '92.

You will be better off if you get the whole assy new they have bearings and price 67.oo Or you could have someone machine a new set of bushings.

Paul: It has been 15 years since I had either my Super A or 130 apart. I know they are both the same. I am not certain the A is same. I have a IT manual for all the C-123 engines and the parts listing and diagram do not show a bushing of any kind. I know there are other books in between yours and mine. However my thoughts are if it didn't exist in 1940 or in 1958, it probably didn't happen. Could it be a bushing someone has added to achive extended life to fan hub and shaft. That is the best answer I can muster.

Hugh, I sort of suspected that that bushing was added. If I can't bush it better myself, I'll have to replace the whole fan assembly. Just another adventure in this restoration. Thanks guys.

Can the bushing be replace with one that has a built in seal? Don't remember how it's constructed, but you might check with a pump repair shop. Just guessing here.
