I put a 12v battery in the sm back in june, and got into the archives tonite and saw there were several people who had questions about it. I dropped the battery in and hooked it up positive ground, wired a chrysler-type resistor in the battery line to the coil, and its been starting ever since without boosters or towing. The miss I had was appearantly due to the coil being fed the full 12 volts. The ammeter is still reading 20-25 volts charging at WOT (may explain all those fried 6v batteries). I've got new lights, a flasher unit, signal lamps, and switches to outfit it with lights, also contemplating rewiring the whole tractor. For my flashers I am trying to come up with brackets that will hold them out above and slightly in front of my tires so that I will also have a place to stand when I need to fill it from gas cans, bolt-ons, of course.

I thought you would have to go to a negative ground when changing over to an automotive charging system. That is what I did when I changed my "M" last year. My 2 cents.

I didnt change the charging system. Its the 5 yr old replacement generator and almost-as-old regulater we got from wholesale tractor parts up here in saegertown. Maybe he got us the wrong regulator maybe we did something wrong hooking it up but its charging a 12v battery.

Scot,

Now, I know that this is probably just a typo; but you've got an ammeter that reads voltage? :>)
