The carb off my '47 H is a 45108 DB which, from the Blue Ribbon Service Manual is the combination gas/distallate or kerosine engine (my tank and tracktor are gas-only). The bottom half of the carb looks more like the gas-only picture in the manual. After pulling the choke plate, separating the halves and pulling the jets, while turning over the bottom half of the carb, what looks like a ball bearing about 3/16ths of an inch in diameter fell out of . . . somewhere. I've looked in both the Blue Ribbon Service and I&T Shop Service manual - I can't see anything in the drawings or any mention of this ball. I must be missing something. Can anyone tell me where this ball goes?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave, If your IH dealer does not have the ball, you can get one at a bicycle repair shop. They carry loose ball bearings. I think it is 3/16 in dia. I lost one once myself, and it cost me 12 cents to replace. The springs are harder to match up.

The "dent" the others are referring to is in the choke shaft about 1/4" in from the lever.
Put the spring & ball in the hole in the carb air intake (lightly lube) and press the ball into the hole then slide the shaft in. Now you can re-install the choke plate. Check that the tapered edge of the plate matches the air passage.
Leave the screws slightly loose and close the choke to allow the plate to center itself in the opening. Now tighten the screws firmly and clinch or deform the end of the threads so the screw cannot back out and end up inside a cylinder. Red or blue Loctite will work also. Be sure ALL jets & passages are clean so you only need to do the job once.
Good luck.

That was it - there's a dent in the choke lever side plate the ball fits in when in the choke off position. There is no dent in my TISKO rebuild kit's side plate. I guess I'll drill a little dent to duplicate it - unless what I see is just wear . . . What have people found in the IH rebuild kits?

Sounds like the ball and accompanying spring that keeps tension on the choke lever. There is a hole for it just in front of the choke shaft hole. You also need to find the spring. Part numbers for ball and spring are 52791R1 and 46059D. Your carb is a D-10, distillate has a drain cock and different jets, but I have seen gas only carbs with the drain cock also. Carbs are otherwise the same.

It has been a while since I've worked on one of these but it seems like it and a spring go in a hole behind the choke lever to help keep it from moving when it is in the open position. There should be a "dent" in the lever where this rests in when open.
Hope this helps.
