Was milling around outside and decided to see if the F-20 would start. Cranked it a couple of times and wal-la fired up. Carb needs to be rebuilt as it has to stay half choked to stay running. Let her warm up a little while and jumped on. I let out on the clutch and she died. Went round front to give her a crank and on the second one she kicked me like a mule in the left arm on the inside of the elbow. Thought it was broke at first but I can still move it right now though its stiff. Its getting bigger and ugly but the ice rap helps. Thats what I get for pushing insted of pulling . Score 1 TKO for the 20. Buy the way I rambled all this one handed.

I was litterally rolled in the yard one day by an F-20. The thing was running but very ruff and was winding down and fixing to die. I was standing in front ready to start cranking as soon as the engine stopped. When it stopped, I had just enough time to push the crank in so that it would catch when the engine fired backwards on that final TDC. It wrapped up both of my arms in the crank, must of turned atleast a couple of revolutions, and I ended up flat on my back laying in the yard. Fortunately, I didn't break anything. Another time, the old F-20 kicked back on me when trying to start it when really cold. That time I was cranking correctly, and the impulse was working and the spark advance was set right, but she kicked. My H has a distributor and it kicks back all the time when hand cranking. Be sure to crank safely and correctly. If you do that, sooner or later one will kick back and it won't hurt ya none. If you don't, sooner or later one is going to kick back and hurt ya.

Hey guys, I have posted about this before. The last time I got kicked from my tractor I decided that was enough!. I found a 14" pully and attached a hub to it that goes where the crank goes, and now I rope start it. Have done it many times no problems. Much safer, I would encourage everyone to try this. If you have any questions please e-mail me. You can look in parts & pieces under f12 pully for pics.

Ouch! The same thing happened to me last year while try to crank my F-20. It had never kicked before, but did this time and whacked the inside of my left arm really bad and threw the crank across the yard. I ended up with the ugliest bruise from shoulder to wrist that took almost a month to heal. And I was grateful that my arm was still attached to my shoulder, since I've heard the horror stories of other folks. Needless to say, I have followed all of the correct cranking procedures ever since, and the F-20 has never kicked again.

I know its unrealted, but since were all talking about doing dumb things, or doing things wrong and getting hurt, Id chime in!

I was tuning the carb on my retired racing gokart a couple years ago. I had it running, at idle, on the floor in my dads little shop. I was kneeled down behind it adjustting the carb. 1 had on engine felling vibrations, after adjusting screws, waiting to adjust some more. The other hand was wrapped arounf the fuel tank mount, I was leaning on. my arm slipped and touched the plug sending my hand and screw driver into the carb. The screw driver lodged itself in between the governer/throttle shaft assembly. It went WOT, with my arm still attached.
Like a fool, I didnt want it to go into the back of the shop so idecided to hang on, and try to stop it....Well its got a 5hp Tecumseh racing engine with racing spec carb and racing head..all the goodies. It took off like a rocket, I held it for a bit until I head a ripping noise from my shoulder, then a tingling chill down my arm, then a POP..I let go and it wen 2 feet into the bench where it stalled...go figure.

My amr was now Hot ans swelling. I hobbled through the yard, into the house..I never wen to the hospital..(dont like em). We got it healed and I could lift weights again after 3 months.

anyways...we all do stupid things, but looking back on what I did I can laugh...but when it happened there was no laughing!

If the magneto impulse is working it is really hard to get one to kick. Even with the spark lever wrong. The impulse has two purposes, one to retard the spark about 25* when starting and to make the armature in the Magneto spin fast to generate a hotter spark. And I just know everyone's impulse works like it should.

I'm glad you know what you did wrong. It just can't be said often enough when dealing with things that crank, Only crank by pulling up from the 6 o'clock position to about the 10. Quarter turn cranks only. Yeah I know, I've cranked things the wrong way to but the times they kicked I was doing it right and only got the back of my RIGHT arm smacked when the crank came around. My Model T and A are the guilty parties to that.

Get better fast !!!!!

Had a guy ask me if I would put the re-built mag back on his Oliver 80. I had never worked on an Oliver before so I timed it by removing #1 plug and finding TDC because no timing marks were visible. When it was ready to fire I told him to be very careful cranking it because I wasn't sure if it was perfectly on TDC. He wasn't a very big man so he put his foot on the front wheel, grabbed the crank with both hands and pulled. I was waiting for the crank to launch him into the next county, but luck was on our side and the old '80' fired right off. Boy was I releived. This happened at a threshing show so it would have been quite a scene if things would have gone the other way. I have only had one kick back happen to me, with a Wisconsin V4. It leaves a lasting impression!

About 15 years ago a friend was usuing his wd45. after a couple of hours he stopped and then decide to restart the tractor - the battery was weak - so he tried to crank start it - 1st time in years - He said he just toughed the crank - engine was at tdc - kicked and drove his thumb thru his wrist!!! 4 operations a least a year off work and a hand that will never be 100% Be careful out there! You musta fergot to retard the spark before givin' her a spin.I often find myself double checking the position of the spark lever so as not to get kicked. My F-12 from my teenage years kicked me ONCE.Dad's Fordson kicked once too,he was at the controls,I was cranking. So far-only 2 kicks, years ago.Nock on wood!!

Guess I had the same feelin that you did this weekend. Only difference is mine has an electric start. That 12 volt battery really turns it fast.

Here is a unit for sale in the photo ads. Kinda pricey but guess would be better than a broken arm or worst!!

Take care, and have a Happy New Year.
