My uncle has a 140 that won't lift his plow any more, and he has asked me to rebuild the one touch control unit. I am not a mechanic, but do have mechanical abilities, How difficult a job is it to replace the seals and o-rings? He called our IH dealer and was told there are two different kits, one for about $100. and the other for #200+. I have an IT manual, and an IH service manual from Binderbooks.

WalJohn: Is the touch control unit leaking anywhere? Will the hitch lift without the plow attached to tractor? I am assuming this tractor has one point fast hitch. Usually when people put a kit in touch control the reasons are leaking, controls will not stay set, etc. What I'm trying to say here is don't rule out the possibility of pump being the problem.

Have you checked the hydraulic oil and screen in system. When I say oil I am not so concerned about amount as I am about forign matter in the oil. These little tractors operate on a very small hydraulic reservoir thus clean water free oil is a must. New oil and clean screens can do wonders on these. That small reservoir also creates a situation whereby you can not have a leak very large or long until the system is low and pump is starving for oil. This has ruined a lot of pumps over the years.

I have owned 6 of these tractors in my lifetime, currently still have 3 of them. I have yet to do any hydraulic repair. I know none of the 3 have ever had kits. I know 2 of the 3 have never had new pumps, I suspect the 3rd one has not had a pump either.

Hugh, the unit will lift the plow, but not enough to trip it, barely clears the ground. Uncle said he had a leak and replaced the gasket where lines leave one touch to go to pump. I replaced the Hytran and cleaned the screen not too long ago, and has not been used much since then.

WalJohn: You didn't confirm on the one point fast hitch, I have some more thoughts along these lines. That hitch, if so equiped has mechanical advantage settings as well. Do your hydraulic rockshafts have the same travel pattern? (distance of travel) Is the spring assist to the hitch rockshaft in place? The shaft going from rockshaft to hitch at rear, has adjustment at rear for height of hitch lift. It also can be attached to one of two holes on rear rockshaft arm or lever. The upper hole will lift more weight, the lower hole makes hitch lift faster. To get maximum lift height on hitch, the big nuts on pull shaft may need adjusting. These tractors will actually only lift the plows about 6 to 8 inches off ground, sitting on level.

I'm not familiar with the $200 kit, the $100 one contains seals and gaskets, the number is 354 007 R96. There is also a kit for the pump, not going to list that because there is more than one pump, kits are not the same. The 4 boots are extra. If you repair the resevoir under the tank, you should remove the gas tank and other stuff in the way. Job is not hard, just time consuming. Everything should be kept clean.

Hugh is probably right, they usually leak. And, the part number I gave is for a Super A, 140 may or may not be different, sorry, my CRS seems to be changing the words I read. A very common problem in the pump is that it lets hyd oil leak into the crankcase if the seal is bad, if you are going to look at the pump, replace that seal or o-ring and make sure there is no groove in the shaft -- not many people take as good care of tractors a Hugh.
