take a look at an article "step by step 12-volt conversion by bob melville..i think you can get there by...http://www.ytmag.com/articles/artint195.htm there are a lot of good articles and diagrams on 12 volt conversions. made life easy for my conversion...the biggest reason i switched is cost. i like the idea of sticking with 12volt with all my tractors/equipment, since i have more machinery than batteries, i am swapping out alot...

Donald: I presume your system is already neg ground. If not you will have to use neg. ground. Just a matter of putting battery other way and reversing wires to amp gauge. You will find you have an extra wire in your harness. I always use that for an excite wire and use a push button type switch to activate. Push button switch important so you will not forget and leave on when tractor is not running. I also like to use a dual pulley on alternator, from a V8 Buick or Olds. This give gives a bit more leway in mounting as you can use either pulley.

Don't be discouraged by the nay sayers, alternators are less expensive, charge better, etc. I have 3 of these going, one 6 volt and two 12 volt. My tractors start better, run better and ignition components last longer. If you need more info send me an e mail.

When you convert to negative ground don't forget to swap wires around on your coil, still might work, lot less power though.
