I have not recieved my service manual yet. Can anyone tell me what the charging rate should be for this unit. It starts fine, does not seem to have low batteries but a voltmeter put on the lighting circuit shows a voltage of 14.5-16 volts when the engine is throttled up to PTO speed. This seems excessive

Hi BFarr,

It all depends upon your battery's state of charge. If the battery is fully charged, the system should be regulated to maintain it's voltage at 14.2 volts.

If however, the battery is very low, the rate could be as high as 16 to 18 volts.

I wouldn't want to see a system running any higher than 18v, however as this would more than likely indicate a shorted exciter circuit.

When you first start your rig, the charging voltage will be fairly high and then will gradually come down to 14.2 volts within a few minutes as the battery is recharged back to it's original state.

Hope this helps,

Allan

Thanks for the reply
I got to it tonight before dark and the regulator was bad so that it would increase output as the rpm went up...17 at max. New part and the reading is now 12.5 at idle. 14 at higher setting.
