I have this knock (loud now), that has almost always been there sincew ive owned it 5 yrs ago. It is so loose and lod that in dying, on the last revolutions you can hear a distenctive clack clack. I took off the portholes and grabbed the connecting arms with no result. I took a prybar and tried to move the crank, one end and the other with no result. Could one of the pistons be wallowed out in the pin hole connecting it with the connecting arm? If so, is there a way of finding out if this is so without taking off the head. Ive thought of taking out the spark plugs, and getting a wire and making an L out of it and checking the depth of each piston from the bottom of the spark plug hole, thinking that if it is wallowed out that the piston wont dome up as far as the rest at top dead center. What is your thoughts? Thansk

I have noticed oil comeing out around the forward inspection hole in muy 30, and tonight when I starterd it up for a neighbor to hear, and opened up the inspection plate after shutting it down, the crankcase was full of smoke. Coukld it be building up pressure in there causing the oil to come out of one but not the other hand hole, or, does the handholes need new gaskets?

Bill, I will give it a another try .If you change rod and piston, just use your rod bearing and shims if you don't want to tackle shimming the bearing.I have another question ,since your noise is constant when you pull wires.Could your governor be the culprit ? I had a F-20 that the governor weights were bad.I would advise taking a piece of rubber or plastic pipe and hold to your ear and move around over the motor when it's knocking and see if you can determine the site of knock.I have unhide my e-mail if you want to write me.Thanks Ralph ps I'm not too brillant at this time of night

I see now that if I take the rods loose, none should have any give in them but the one loose in the piston. If I order a used rod and piston, how much trouble will I have with them not possibly fitting the same on the crank? Also, how much trouble will I have slippg the piston up the bore from the bottom. What is your thoughts aout getting a piston and rod, cutting it off 1/2 way down or so and welding it to the bottom half of the arm I have, so as to keep the fit that is already there? Thanks for all the help guys.

Bill, If you take the rods loose and shake the rod and watch the piston pin there shouldn't be any slack in the rod and piston and by taking the rod loose you have where you can shake it without the rod being bolted down under any pressure .Ralph

Bill,
This may be a stupid suggestion, but could it be the impulse coupling you hear engaging when the engine RPMs fall? I can hear this on my F-20. It sounds like a metallic slapping noise which is not present when the engine is running at idle speed.

Iver farmed with crank tractors sinc 1969, and with my CaseCC ive ran it since I was 8. I know what an impuse click is. Ths is a dull rumble ending with loud clanking when it dies

Bill, Jeff is right ,the pistons and rods won't come out the covers but will come out the bottom if pan is removed. My brain had a drain and I want to thank Jeff for catching it .You could also take the rods loose and if there is any slack in the pins.

what do u mean I could take the rods loose if there is any slack in the pins? By the pin, Im taking it u mean the wrist pins holding the connecting rods to the pistons. How would taking the connecing rods loose help that??

Bill, You can short out plug wires ,one at a time ,with motor at low idle and noise should change or disappear.Piston and rod is made to come out through inspection covers without removing head.

tried slow running and pulling the wires one at a time. Too fast and it ran normal, too slow, and the noise was loud, but uniform, but when it started to die the engine would clunk and clank, but I couldnt tell no difference in them

Ralph you will not be able to remove the pistons through the inspection covers the rod bearing will if you are going to remove pistons and rods you have to remove the oil pan i have 3 F-30 and thats the only way there coming out

I have an H that knocks a little bit. Sounds like a bad bearing. It knocks consistant after starting untill the engine rev's up to normal R.P.M. Yours could very well be in the wrist pin inbetween connecting rod and piston. I would say tear down and inspection would be your best bet. Give every thing a good looking over while your finding the problem.
