Specific casting date?

I recently acquired a IH H for restoration. The serial number is 27XXXX, which, I believe, makes it an early 1948 model. The casting letters are R's, except for the rear-end, which is a Q. I'm thinking when I buy it, "looks good, nothing terribly suspicious here." After I get it home I find a specific date cast on the operators platform. The date is the same size as the other casting numbers and reads, "1-28-48". This date is cast between the oil fill plug and the brake lock on the platform close to the left rear brake. Has anyone else seen a specific date cast here before? I am sure several of you have much more experience than I do, and I'm wondering why I've never seen this, and what it is for.
Thanks

I hope everyone doesn't think I'm getting to carried away with this casting code business, but I found something else sort of neat. Stenciled on the right side of the raditor, about 12 inches long and an 1 1/2 high, is the date 1-22-48. It looks like it might have been stamped into the black paint when it was still wet. I was going to re-paint the radiator, but now I think I'll leave the sides unpainted, since its under the sheet metal anyway. None of this makes my ordinary H worth a lot more money, but I'm sure having a good time. Does anyone else know where there might be dates stamped, stenciled, or hidden on these Farmalls.

Hi, as long as you're into casting numbers! On the H block, there is a number just below the firing order number and mine is 9*9*J. What is that? Also, if a tag # FBH 3XXXX6 is the same as the # on the block, that is the original engine, right?

Thanx!

Sept 9, 1940. Engine and chassis serials don't have to match, although on one that old, they may be pretty close. But, if your chassis serial starts with a 3 and has 6 digits as you indicated, it could be anywhere from a late 1948 thru the end of production, depending on what the other numbers are. With five digits beginning with a 3 it is indeed a 1940.

CNKS: Thanks for the come back! Listen, I made a mistake on the chassis #, I was thinking of one of my other ones. Its FBH 423x6. Now, thats the same # thats on the engine block too. The 9*9*J means it was Sept 9th 1940. Right? Would that mean that its a 1941 H? Oh, I want to thank Mike in Canada, for the come back on me playing with the Cubs mother, the H :>) I didn't get a chance.
This is the best place in the world, to come to for answers for the big iron. (Red) Green, is okay too, they ARE Farmalls, just not ripe yet. :>)

Thanx!

I assume the x means you can't make out the digit. Then it is a 1940, which agrees with the Sept 9, 1940 casting number. You confused me at first because X6 means low speed gears, but the first H had serial FBH 501.

Yes, CNKS it l@@ks like it could be a 3 or 8 ?!
I should have put FBH 423?6. Sorry about that! Okay, what does FBH stand for? Oh, if you come back to the old post's!!! Will a 300 carb, fit an H ?

Thanx!

Perhaps Guy Fay will correct me, but I think for some reason IH put that only on the transmission cover instead of 1*28*R.

"Casting codes seem to follow two formats. The first is just the straight month, date and year (12-3-36) for example. These codes are found infrequently, seemingly without pattern, although W 30s from the mid-1930s often show this code on the engine block"

I still wonder why? I don't know anything about casting, but I wonder, was it the first cast of the day? Or maybe the first time the mold was used after changing something? I'm sure the same answer for my H would apply to the Ms you've seen.

Again, it simply means that the transmission cover was made on Jan 28, 1948, and it fits in very well with the R's (1948) on your other castings, also the Q (1947). You will have to ask some of the deceased engineers why that format is found only on your transmission cover.

They put a small tag on the patterns to denote the day that the piece was cast. On some later castins, they even put a small dial to tell you which shift it was cast on. Trivia fact, next time you've got some time to kill in a porta-potty, a lot of them have the same kind of casting dates and times for the plastic parts.

Guy Fay!! I just realized that I have you book at home on the Farmal Letter Series! I realize I'm showing my Farmal ignorance here, but I have been amazed at all of the useful information I've received from this discussion board from all of the people that help answer questions. This is great.

Yes have seen several "specific" dates from late fortys most that I have seen have been on torque tube though. Do not know why this was done.
