I bought an old IH 434 tractor. When I changed the hydraulic fluid, the filter screen was almost blocked solid. When I drained out the reservoir,I noticed about 3/8 inch of sludge throughout.I reached in the hole with whatever I could and scraped a small portion out. Is there something I can put in the system to flush it? Or would the freshly dislodged dirt/sludge ruin the hydraulic pump right away?

Used to see that once in a while when I worked at a IH dealership. We would spray, slosh as much diesel fuel as we could around the inside, let it sit for a while, drain it, do it again. Then fill up the rearend with a 1/2 mixture of diesel and Hytran, new filter, then run the tracter for a while and get the hydralics good and warm. Drain it and refill with Hytran and new filter. Run again and check the filter and replace it. Never lost a pump doing it that way.

Never had much luck getting sludge to dissolve by putting in diesel fuel or kerosine and just letting it set. I suggest getting a big pump type oil can with a long flex spout on it and filling the can with diesel fuel or kerosine.(Please don't use gasoline, it's a fire and health hazard!) Use the flex spout to get around the parts in there and squirt the solvent to wash the sludge out the drain hole. A bit tedious, but with patience, I think you can clean out most of the sludge.

You might try diesel fuel to remove some of the sludge but don't run it with the diesel in it just let it sit for a few hours

Old, would it maybe help if Rob A. was to rock this tractor back and forth a bit to slosh the diesel around to dislodge more of the sludge before draining it? Just a thought. Tom

Ya if he jacked it up and would spin the wheels that would probably help a lot
