I would like to dress out a farmall M with all the aftermarket accessories of the day such as hand clutch, live pto, 9 speed, M&W crank etc. I'm sure I'm not the only one wanting to do this. What do you think the availability and cost of such a project would be. Would one be better off to try to find a tractor already rigged up this way?

Bottom line is, its your tractor, and you gotta do whats right for you. True in my case Im kinda partial to keeping them showroom stock, but found out on my reciently restored H,that my poor old military issue hip couldnt take the factory seat, and had to make a switch. Another thing to consider, is that all the loot you were gonna spend on the aftermarket stuff can be saved towards your next project. Thats just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I too am wondering the reasoning behind this. I know there were miscelanious after market items that could be added to the M. The real truth is, they were most likely added to the tractor over the years for an operational reason and not just because they were available. I'm just saying that an owner most likely wouldn't of added a 9 speed transmission without a good reason. You want some proof on that, look at how many M's still don't have the 9 speed transmission today. Why not go ahead and add cab, air, heat, radio, hazzard lights, power steering, tilt wheel, front wheel assist, dual remote hydraulics, and on, and on, and on. Ya, ya, I know your thinking "Where is this guy going?" . Actually, I am a big believer in fixing one up the way you want it. I just think that adding something just to be adding it not only takes away from the factory originality of tractor, but also seems to be pointless unless you have a justifiable use for that option. It's kind of like taking an old car, setting it on a new frame with mag wheel's and power breaks, adding a V-8 engine, lower the roof 4 to 8 inches, make it a low rider, and add a boom box stereo. Take it to a car show and some people will wrongfully say "Look at that old car." and some people will rightfully say "Look at that custom built car." But hay, some people lean toward custom built, and some lean toward factory origin. I lean toward factory origin, just my 2 cents worth. More power to ya, whatever you do. I like originality in character too, which shows up in alot of people's projects. That is what freedom is all about.

I have a comment on why a person would take an older tractor(an M in my case, too)and dress it out somewhat. In my case, I've decided to do it because it's the only tractor I have, and it was purchased by my dad in the middle '50s. I'm sure I could find a tractor with 3 point, live hyd., etc., but it wouldn't have the sentimental value that the M does. When I get done with it, I will have a very handy tractor and also have a family heirloom.

I am kinda doing the same thing with my grandfathers tractor. I am adding a factory wide front, power steering, live hydralics and a 3 point. I cant replace the tractor so like to make it more useable

This could be a never-ending project if you really get into it! You'll likely save cost, and certainly save time if you can find a tractor that has some of what you want already on it! A few months back, there was a Farmall M in the Photo Ads that had a considerable amount of M&W stuff on it.

If I was going to try this, I'd look on e-bay for some old M&W literature, ads, catalog, etc, to find out what they provided, and perhaps get some pictures. Also, a mid-to-late 1950s Tractor Supply catalog will occasionally show up on e-bay, and they have a bunch of things that were add-ons for Farmalls; everything from different ratio gearsets to special lever attachments for pto and belt pulley controls. Don't overlook old IH literature concerning specialty features that were available from the factory, but not commonly ordered in a particular part of the country.

Take a digital camera with you to some big tractor shows, and look for unique items or usual items set up in different ways. Red Power Roundup would be a good place to start. Sometimes, if you just walk slowly and look each one over carefully, you'll find things that weren't factory items, but the owner left them on when restoring because the tractor may have been equipped with them for 50 years or more. If you find some old codger sitting in a lawnchair next to an interesting tractor, ask him about it, and get his memory going on what he farmed with a few years back. Long, slow walks through tractor graveyards will find you a few gems, also. Somewhere in the archives is a rather extensive list of add-on items that were available. I would have no idea what topic to search under to find it, however. I guess you could simply ask folks to post what's on their Farmalls that isn't factory stock.

Good luck with this, and please update us on your project from time to time!

I think that would be a neat idea it would surely get a lot of attention at a show as tons of the newer generation cannot understand how we farmed without a cab live hy,three point ect. It also shows the type of stuff that was avail from someone in a small town that had some great ideas to make a product even better. GOOD LUCK and go for it it is your tractor.

I would look for a tractor with at least some of those options already on it. saw an M sell last week for $1000 that had the new style IH wide front, (had been welded) m&w live pump and m&w live clutch. The tin was pretty rough. tires were good.

I know of several in our area that had the hand clutch, increased the hp and had to bolt solid the hand clutch so that it would not slip. Just info.

i am in the process of doing this also. m+w made a lot of things to make an m a better and more useful tractor. a few years back there was a picture in redpower of an m at a farm show that m+w was showing with all of there goodies on it.

Tractorboy you are most welcome to do as you please with your tractor but I was wondering why. These tractors were built in an era when all the bells and whistles didn't come with them. What are you using the tractor for that you would need live power and a 9 speed trans. Most common on these tractors was the hand clutch which gave you a form of live power and that was about it , everything else was an add on for a purpose ie power steering if you were running a loader, hand clutch if you ran a baler, ..my guess is that it would run you into some money to do all you want, clutches are sparse, 3 point hitches about $600, don't know about 9 speed, but am guessing hard to find..anyway good luck with whatever you decide and have a Merry Christmas

I want to build a tractor that you might have found in the late fifties on a dealer lot. We have plenty of H's and M's, Dad still has his 1950 H he bought new and it still sees regular duty and gets good care. I would just like to accesorize one good tractor just to have one.
