I hooked my Super M to a PTO dynamometer at a tractor pull this past summer to see how much horsepower it would produce. According to the owner of the machine, the procedure is to run the PTO rpm up past 540, then increase the load on the PTO until the rpm drops to 540. At that point, you read the horsepower. My Super M showed over 50 hp (I can't remember the exact number), but my rpm would only go just over 540 rpm, so there was very little "room" to load it down to 540. The other tractors tested would rev significantly past 540 so that the load could be increased further before they dropped to the rated speed. My tractor is in excellent original condition and runs great. The throttle linkage is not binding or limited, so my question is: How do you adjust the rpm range with the governor? I have never worked on a governor. I did pretty good in the 7000 lb class anyway - I was slightly outpulled by a Super MTA and an M with a corn-picker low gear.

You may only be doing slightly above 540 RPM, but I'd bet your governor is barely open at that speed with no load. What is important is how well the governor holds that load, right to the point where it has the throttle body set wide open.

If you are reading 50 PTO HP from a SM, the odds are that something is working correctly.

High idle speed must be correct. Then one loads the tractor to the specified RPM's and read HP.

The governor isn't all that complicated to work on. The dyno procedure sounds generally correct. Just because your tractor wouldn't rev much past the stock rpm level does not mean you were necessarily at a disadvantage. An accurate reading at 540 pto rpm would mean that the tractor had to MAINTAIN that level for more than a few seconds. It wouldn't really matter if the other tractors could rev higher before being loaded down to 540 pto rpm, as long as they had to HOLD that level once they got to that speed. You can't get an accurate reading unless the tractor can keep the power-output steady. Reading the needle "on-the-fly" as the tractor contnues to lose rpms doesn't count!

Sounds to me like your govener is working properly and others need work. The purpose of govener is to keep RPM close to same at light or heavy load. I believe 540 is correct PTO RPM if it runs up much past this under light load some implements can be damaged not to mention danger from something flying apart.

When I put my super m on the dyno, it had 47 hp, but I don't think it was done exactly how you said you did it. When my super m was dynoed at the belt it had 48-50 hp.

I don't want to take the time right now to go into detail, it's Christmas, but there is a lot of very good info in the archives. Just do a search. I will also tell you that those governors are not complicated, don't be afraid of it. I have made big improvements in 2 of mine without buying any new parts. Just dig in.

if the high idle screw in the governor is already backed clear out your governor spring is tired.
