Loader for an H

I'm curious how these loaders work on a farmall H. I have read a ton of old posts that say they really aren't that useful because of no live hydraulics and the H isn't strong enough for a loader?

Could anyone out there that has one with a trip bucket on an H tell me if in fact they are useful or no?

ALso I don't really understand the live hydrualics bit. Does this mean the tractor has to be in gear and Moving for the loader to raise? OR does it mean that the tractor can be out of gear but the clutch released and it will work?

Any help or opinions on these two items are greatly appreciated.

ALso have a Merry Christmas everyone.

Thanks

I also have a Model 31 loader on my Super H. It always amazes me how much it will lift. The bucket works really well for manure and for dirt as it it narrow enough to be compatable with the power of an H. My dad had a Farmhand loader on the H for many years. We stacked hay, loaded manure, fed 150 head of cattle, and cleaned snow out with it in South Dakota (8 ft wide snow scoop and grapple fork). It may have been a little light but it didn't destroy the loader. Like someone else said, I also have a blade for the front of my Model 31 loader. It works really well for plowing snow. None of these loaders are easy to take off and especially put back on like the new quick hitch types you can buy today. The disadvantage of these loaders is the trip dump feature. I was loading some manure for our neighbor and his wife wanted some manure for her garden. She had a small trailer behind her garden tractor that she wanted me to fill. I dumped the bucket load into her trailer and just about smashed it flat. We had to do some work on it to get it bent back into shape again. Roger

PA I grew up on an H and Super A We had an after market loader for the H single acting lift cyl. and trip bucket. We didn't miss live hyd. and live PTO because no one had it. I would like to have a dollar for every pound of manure I have loaded and silage fed 0ut of a trench silo. Timing is the big secret in using tractors with out live power and hyd.

PA: My dad bought a new H with a 31 loader in 1951. That combnation loaded many loads of manure. I have seen my dad loading manure with 5 spreaders hauling away from him, two of them 150 bushel spreaders. I have seen my dad stick the forks of that loader into the manure pile down 4' from surface, put the H in neutral, hold the brakes and pull the hydraulic controll. Up came the loader, he went back for a second one and bingo a 100 bushel spreader was full.

In 1955 he put that same loader on a new 300, mainly for the live hydraulics. It never lifted the heavy loads of manure like the old H would. It was a good thing, 300 hydraulics were live as you were always in reverse trying to lighten the load, so the hydraulics would lift.

Never under estimate an H, put enough counter weight on drawbar and they will load with an M with the same loader.

MR,
Here is a pic of the loader I have for sale on the implment page. This is a 52 H and the loader will lift the rear end of the tractor off the ground. Like the other post said you just have to learn to use it. I am selling it because I got a MF-135 with a Quick tach loader. Would consider selling the whole package tractor, loader and three point for the right price.

You'll never understand how much you'll use a loader until you get one. A Farmall H has PLENTY of power to lift stuff with a loader if the hydraulic system is in good shape. I have a '43H that my Dad put a loader on in 1947. It did HEAVY duty with that loader until the mid-50s when we got a 300 Utility to do the loader work. They are hard to steer when the loader is full, but you'll catch onto steering it while it's moving, and you'll learn to use the hydraulic system effectively, even if it's not live.

If you can find/afford a loader made in the last 25 years, chances are it has a sub-frame that bolts to the rear axle housings and the side rails along side the engine. This type of loader can be mounted in 15 minutes or less.

I just bought an H and then I bought a Dual loader for it. The old guy I got the H from used it on a dairy farm and used if for haying. I to was advised not to buy an H for a loader tractor because it was too small or because of the live hydraulic issue. Well, it seem to work well for what I use it for, pushing snow. I also plan to use it for some landscaping and other things on my small acreage. I would suggest to get some wheel chains for it. You can put a sprocket next to the fan belt pully and put a chain to a hydraulic pump to have live hydraulic pump. Dual has this sprocket. You see alot of H, SH and 300 size tractors with loaders on them in Minnesota and South Dakota where I am from. I would not want to move round bales or feed 100 head of cows with it but for what I use it for its great. Of course a 4020 or 856 size tractor would be better but that depends on what you want to use it for. Power steering would be nice but if you need to turn tight just put the loader on the ground and turn the wheel. I would not let any body tell me know that an H is not a good loader tractor. BTW you may want to get hydraulic bucket with your loader but then it depends on what you want to use it for. Curt

I have a McCormick #31 on my H, it is one of the handiest things to have around. Not only will it move dirt and gravel with the bucket, but take the bucket off, mount a blade, and now I have one of the best snow clearing rigs around. Don't let anyone tell you the H is not big enough for a loader, or that the hydraulic system is weak, I have used my loader to lift and move some things you would have thought impossible, including some 4ft. by 5ft. by 4in. concrete slabs, and the latest thing was lifting a 3 bottom trailer plow off of my gooseneck flatbed trailer, the H never even grunted.

You have the right idea on how the hyd. work. Loader will raise while tractor is moving, clutch out. Loader will raise with tractor stopped, clutch out. Loader won't raise unless clutch is out. These loaders were mostly used to load manure in to a spreader. Most were set up with forks, these could be covered with an attachment that allowed you to load sand or lime and such. They made the tractor hard to steer when the bucket was loaded, also made it top heavy when it was raised. They aren't that easy to take off and on either, but they are cheap. Really depends on how much use you will get out of a loader. Putter
