My father use to pull with a 1950(not sure the exact year)W6. Another man pulled with a MD. He would beat my father every time. I think the MD was tuned right up, b/c the black smoke that rolled out of the stack when she was pulling hard was something to see. The owner said that "no it was not super tuned but set to factory specs". My question is was there any difference between pulling power of the Super M's & the Super MD's as well as a difference between Super MTA's & Super MD-TA's? I know that no Nebraska test was ever done on the Super MTA or Super MD-TA but there must be farmers, collectors, etc out there that could shed some light on the subject. If your woundering, it never bothered my Dad that he never beat the MD but it burnt by backside b/c everyone else at the pulls never super tuned or messed with their engines to get more HP. It was all in fun. Thanks for any info.
Buck

When it comes to tractor pulling it is sometimes not the power of the tractor that will win the contest. I believe if a tractor that is less hp is balanced and weighted right, with the right tires, it will outpull a higher hp tractor everytime that is not set up. Sometimes heavier-diesels with more power-tractors stripped to make a lighter class don't do anything. There is a lot of different factors in pulling, it takes a lot of experience to figure your tractor out.

I can beat JD 3010 and 3020's diesels in the 7000# class with my Super M almost everytime. But we know half the reason there-they are JD's.
I even had a guy on a 3020 diesel laugh right at me and my tractor and said "why waste the time to pull that little thing in this class?" I made sure to wave to him after I beat him.

It is all in good fun.

Just my opinion.

Diesel will always outpull gas, unless you have a high rpm gas screamer with lots more room for rpm drop. Diesel has way more torque, therefore takes alot more force to lower the revs than a gas. I just broke up 20 acres with a 10 foot ih deep tillage and my wd 6. It was a good pull, every so often the cultivator would hookup a bit and lift the front end of the tractor off the ground. I would not even attempt to do this with my w 400 gas. Gas makes a better run around light duty tractor due to ease of starting, lighter weight and less warmup/cooldown time. But you will never beat a diesel for heavy field work and long life.

Assuming all things equal, the tire size may be the determining factor.I dont know,I dont pull.

I think the W6 came with 30 inch tires, the MD with 38. Diameter makes a lot more difference than width.
Also, the diesel version of almost any model will out pull the gas. I think.

I would have to say the opposite. The diesels don't have the torque the gas do. Once there rpm's are pulled down, it's hard to keep them up while under load. just my two cents

Gas has higher hp, diesel versions have less hp higher torque, look at any engine spec.

I had a 400D for several years , black smoke was part of the package. That was an old diesel that would hang in there and not quit until you could almost count the RPM's. had a long stroke. The long storke engines had a lot of raw power.
