Using an original 6V switch with 12V lights on a '

Continuing to get as much operational as possible, I'm wondering how to use the original 4-position switch with 12V lights. The wiring diagram posted by Robert Melville - Farmall H/M Stock 6V w. cutout - cryptically notes these positions as L-H-D-B (?,?, Dim?, Bright?). What do these positions switch on (or off)? The copy of the owner's manual I have lists functions of a three-position switch (Dim, Bright, Off). How can I use this switch to, for starters, switch on and off just a pair of single beam 12V lights? Can I use this switch to employ both the low and high beams of a pair of regular 12V headlights? I may just rig some lights I've lying around.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave - The 4 position light switch works fine on 12 volt conversions - I've done it many times. Both the L and H positions will be the "lights off" position; D will light the headlights dim (accomplished by reducing the voltage to the front lights) and the rear light bright; B will light all 3 lights bright.

If you use the old switch install only standard tractor-type sealbeam headlights - not aftermarket halogen (55 watt or higher) lights! Reason: The halogen's higher current draw will overheat the dimmer resistor could perhaps start a fire.

Dave,
You may have to add some more info before you get a real accurate answer.

I'm guessing you're converting to 12 volts with an alternator? If that's the case, you won't need the L - H positions on the switch. They're there for use with a cutout/generator to regulate the amount of charge going to the battery. With a regulated system, you won't need the L position and the resistor it puts inline -- the old mechanical regulator with the generator or the solid state version with the alt will do that job for you.

The B D positions are for the lights. There's a air wound resistor that switches in on the D position and dims the lights. If those sealed beams you have are 50 watts or greater per light, you may not want to use the D position as you could overheat and blow the D resistor.

That's my guess of what you're doing - and how it relates to that switch. The switch should work, just don't use all its positions.

we switched dad's 400 over to 12v twenty sum years ago, as I remember, we used the same switch that was used on 6v. we have been using it ever since without any problems. the fouth position on the switch turns on the rear light along with your bright front lights.
