560 gas question

Worked on getting a 560 fired up this weekend, and temporarily succeeded but had to use ether through the carb.
My questions are, (since Ive never worked on one before)
1. Can you use regular unleaded pump gas ,or do you need to add a lead substitue so not to burn the valves.
2. Is the 560 carb hard to repair? Gas just poured out so the float is probably stuck or gummed up.
3. Has anyone converted to electronic ignition, or are points/condenser just as good.
4. Oil pressure guage didnt come up either so Im glad it didnt run long. Will have to check it out.
5. Anyone have a steering wheel thats not too rusted up and want to sell it?
Thanks for your help.

Gotta 560 and its a dream. You can tear that carb down, rebuild and replace just about in the dark. There's not much to it. If you take it apart, clean the needle/seat with cheap carb cleaner and it'll probably run. The things eat points, some people say, although mine's run 4 years now on the set I put in...and I ain't no mechanic, so I don't even know if they're absolutely correct. Thing's are bullet-proof if you keep oil and water in them...

Matt, Thanks for the encouraging news. I need something bullet proff cause it seems like Im always working on something to keep it running. Now that I know it can run, I will change all the fluids, plugs, plug wires and points and condenser. Still need to find why there isnt oil pressure but I suspect its the gauge. Thats real good news about the carb. I'll yank that this weekend and look at it. Do I need a carb kit, gaskets etc or do just make a gasket where the carb mounts to the block?
Thanks, Skip

Sorry for the delay...Christmas break here at work. Anyway, you've probably already figured out that the gasket is pretty simple to make. Use a few different rifle casings to punch out the screw & jet holes and you're in business. Be careful, as I learned from experience that you can't make several generations of gasket in a row. It just keeps "growing", and eventually, it interfered with the float...my mistake. Just make sure everything clears.

I've got a few hydraulic leaks I've been working on, but for the most part, I've got them cleaned up.

When you change the hy-tran, be sure you've got a BIG container. It holds 16 gallons, and there's no valve, you just pull the plug and out comes a 1 inche stream of fluid, under lots of pressure just from the sheer amount of liquid. I use a half a plastic drum cut to fit under the drawbar/PTO.

Hy-tran filter is easy to change, and clean the metal screen w/carb cleaner or gas.

I've been meaning to change the temp guage on my tractor for a long time, just haven't done it yet. Let me know how you get along and I may learn something too. This is my first tractor, and I've never done much wrenching before I bought it. I've already had this thing split for clutch changeout and the top off the transaxle to retrieve a dropped bolt...long story, just suffice it to say that when you pull the access panel off to add hy-tran fluid, always remove the bolts and washers and put them in a safe place BEFORE you pull that plate off.

You need a 7/8 deep socket for the plugs and it should be a thin wall my 40 year old sears works real good don't know if you can get a thin wall any more. you should not need lead in the gas, the 560 had a hard valve and seat that's all the LP's had.

You don't need to run an lead additive. The 6 cylinder IH gas tractors valves are fine with unleaded fuel.
The 560's carburetor is very simple to fix, just make sure you get all of the rust and crud out of it and put a inline filter in or you will be fixing it again.
We put an electronic ignition in our 656 gas and I wished that we had put it years ago.
I have a grease gun hose with an oil pressure gauge on the end that I use when I am starting tractors to check out oil presure.

Sounds to me like you have a hobby now. Buy that thing at the good price, and do some research (compression test), oil change, and join the rest of us in our affliction.
good luck

Sod, I think your right! Just what I need, another project! This tractor, kinda grows on ya! It will be fun. Do you know what size spark plug wrench I need? And whats a good site to get the usual parts...filters, plugs, points, etc?
Do you know the answer about using regular unleaded gas in these 1959 560's ? Do I need a lead additive?
Thanks

If the tractor is extremely low on hours and has seen EXTREMELY limited use since about 1982 it might be worth the time to find a lead substitute. At some point in the early 80's even "Regular" fuel had the lead content greatly reduced. If it had been used regulerly it's likely had unleaded fuel run through it for quite a while and the "damage" has already ben done. If the tractor has been overhauled since about 1985 it may have received the hardened valve seats and leaded fuel is not needed.

dhermesc,
Thanks,
The tractor has "normal" hours and was used by the previous owner into the 90's until he passed on. His daughter used it for a while herself but felt more comfortable on a smaller ford model, hence, she sold it to me yesterday after it sat out for at least 2 years. So, Im sure the valves were never changed over and she used regular unleaded. Oh well, I will see. Thanks for the info.
