How can I remove the rear bearing from the right axle with the bearing retainer so close? No matter what I tried, I couldn't get a bearing puller next to the center. I ended up breaking a tab on the pot metal retainer. This is for a 1942 Farmall A. Thanks.

When you say axle are you talking about the diff drive out of the trans or the one where the wheels mount on.

Larry,I just did this. I had to use a hammer and a block of wood to beat on the axle to push it out. If you beat directly on the end of the axle with a hammer, you can mess up the threads inside it. I had the bearing pressed off at a local garage, replaced the seal and retainer and had the bearing pressed back onto the axle. You will probably need a new pot metal retainer. Not available from IH. Maybe salvage yard. When you replace the axle you can hold the bull pinion and that small beveled washer in place with a large dowel. or better yet, get someone to hold it up for you. Watch your fingers. The sharp edges are like a guillotine in there. Good luck. Hope this helps.

When you removed the nut on the inside and the four capscrews by the hub the axle should slide out then the bearing should be easy to remove as the gear will slide off the splined shaft. You do have the bottom pan off also i take.

The inner bearing came out easily. I am referring to the outer bearing which is next to the retainer and the wheel hub. The retainer is within a quarter of an inch of the hub and one must be able to get some kind of remover to remove the bearing next to it. Does a person have to cut off the bearing so he can slide the retainer off? This particular axle shaft has the hub cast on the outer end so the seal can't be removed from that end. I suppose I could cut the bearing off and then try to find a sealed bearing that would replace it, since the retainer is now cracked. What are your thoughts?
