Fixing Fuel shut-off valve on a '47 H - Part 2

I neglected to mention a very important detail - the leak leaks down the fuel line when the shut-off is closed tight. If I remove the air-cleaner pipe after a night with gas in the tank and the shut-off valve closed, I get what's leaked into the carb pouring out of the air intake port. Do the fixes with the "O" ring (dental floss, packing) just inside the clamp-down nut cure that kind of leak - or does this indicate a problem with the 'male' screw-in-and-out post's not mating sufficiently with the female shut-off valve 'female' seat? If the second instance is the case, how do I fix that?

Thanks again,

Dave

Is there a reason why you don't want to replace the valve with a new one? Your Case/IH dealer has them in stock for around $25.

Usually what happens is someone will take a pair of pliers and crank down on the shut off handle
in order to get it to stop leaking. After this happens a few times, the seat is ruined.

Thanks - that makes sense. Just as a nod to keeping it as original as possible, does anyone know of a way to fix the valve - recondition the seat and plug somehow? This is asked in the spirit of wanting to learn how to deal with it and avoid a 30-mile trip rather than avoiding spending the dough.

Thanks,

Dave
