Fixing fuel shut-off valve on a '47 H

Neither the I&T or the owner's manual have an exploded view of the shut-off valve above the water trap on my '47 H. Eventually the carb will be rebuilt but, for now, I need to stop the shut-off leak.

I've read a post that says (paraphrased): unscrew the hold-down nut and remove that and the part that screws in and out to close and open the valve, get a neoprene "O" ring that fits tight over the shaft, remove all the old packing and put the "O" ring in its place, reassemble. I'd like to know beforehand where this old packing is. Is the order of elements: hold-down nut, packing around the bent screw-in-and-out valve shaft, screw-in-and-out valve shaft, valve seat? Or is the packing between the screw-in-and-out 'male' part of the valve and the 'female' seat of the valve? Sorry about the tortured naming of these parts - I'm trying to be clear.

I tried unscrewing the hold-down nut and then thought I'd be able to pull it and the screw-in-and-out valve shaft together. I wasn't able to do so easily so I figured I'd better get a view of what's going on from the experts before I break anything.

Thanks,

Dave

An old mechanic friend showed me one day how he fixed these shut offs. Loosen the nut and wind several rounds of waxed dental tape or floss around the shaft of the bent shaft. Tighten up the nut which compresses the floss and seals the leak! Presto like. (This was long before teflon tape seal was even thought about). I wish I were the one who discovered that stuff!!!

You might want to consider replacing the entire sediment bowl assembly, shop around, should be able to find one for under 20 bucks.

the handle screws out too, same theads that turn it on and off. If you have the nut off I would try just slipping a new o-ring on the shaft and tighen gently. Another quick fix I have found is wrapping the shaft with teflon tape, (under the nut)
