Help,
Was offered a 560 that has not been run in two years but ran when it was parked. Has sat in field uncovered all this time but my friend now wants to sell it for 800. Looks pretty rough but who knows. I want to try to get it running this weekend. Other than the obvious, anything in particular I should watch for. This would be my first tractor. Also, can anyone recommend a parts manual, and a service manual or anything else that may be useful. Thanks

Old,
Thanks, I guess I could part it out but I'm afraid that once I get into it, I'll probably go all the way and restore it back to close to new. I have a bad habit like that with old cars!!! But not knowing much about tractors yet, and without the help and suggestions that you guys can give me in this forum, I'm not sure where to get the info I need. Unfortunatley, I dont have many friends that are farmers. My area is in New Jersey and on the outskirts of farms. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

I know I'd love to have it but I'm in Missouri and I'm bad about wanting more toys that I don't really need I have 10 tractors right now.

I think $800 is reasonable assuming it won't take much to get running. We are considering this 560 for $1,700, it runs really good, has straight sheet metal (with a really poor paint job) and the tires are really good.

Cliff,
The 560 in the picture is twice as nice as the one I'm looking at. I dont know even if I can get it running. I've been there with old cars. You put more in parts than the machine is worth. Soon, you never can get your money out. It may be better to go after one that is is better shape from the start. By the way, the ser. # has a S-Y that was stamped on it. It appears it was added after it was sold. Does that mean anything to you?

skip, the serial number plates were hand stamped after they were updated with a field service package putting heavier carriers and bearings on the bull pinion. Some of the early ones failed under heavy tillage use.

Nebraska,
Thanks, I read an article about a Idelta or triangle punched in the ID plate following the serial number. I wasn't sure what the S-Y stood for. Like you said, it was for upgraded carriers or bearings. Appreciate the help. Also, this tractor was upgraded, probably by the owner, to 12 volt. I'll run some tests on it in the morning to see if I can get it running. Are you familiar with electronic ignition upgrade kits for these models? That would also be good so not to worry with points/condenser.

800 sounds resonable if it will run. shoot, an old M will bring that.

thanks for the reply. I dont know a thing about tractors, but this is a big machine and I could use it on a small 30 acre plot to harvet trees and drag logs. Looks like it would be a fun project to repair but I dont want to end up pouring tons of money in it. Why arent there more forum questions on the 560? Can parts be found? I have an auto repair business so I should have all the tools and some of the knowledge. Do you recommend any web sites or locations to purchase parts?

Skip,

If you can get that tractor to start, you will probaly know right away what it needs. See that everything works and that the gears are all there in the transmission. If it has a torque amplifier, pay particular attention to that. Look at all these pages, you will get an eyefull of what can be wrong with them (TAs). Otherwise, they are straight forward machines.

Parts are available for the older models, so I would guess that the 560s still have pretty good parts support. Good parts will not be cheap. I'm not looking, but I probably spent close to $2000 on parts for the motor in my H. Since it is not painted up real nice, it would never bring $1500 at an auction. For me, it is a bargain. It works hard and is dead reliable.

You only have to spend as much as you want. You are right, buy the best that you can, if it is going to be a restoration. If you are going to skid logs with it, the perfect paint job might not be an issue.

For manuals try an outfit on the web called binder books. There are several places to get parts, but this website will block their names. I'm guessing that IH dealers are pretty scarce in NJ, no matter where you are.

If it is junk, walk away. But like any classic bike or car, they are always worth more as parts. However, IMHO, it would be a real shame to break up a decent, working tractor just for a few hundred dollars 'profit'.

Greg

Greg,
Thanks for the info. I'll look up the Binder Books web site in a minute. Also, I agree, I wouldnt want to break up the tractor for parts for cash unless the 560 is too far gone. Probaly would just walk away. I really would like to get it running and use it in the woods. My son (16) would love to ride it. You mentioned about a torque amplifier. I hate to admit it but since this is my first tractor, and no one I know has one, I'm not sure even what that is. That's why I need a good web site for publications, manuals, etc.
By the way, this 560 has a wide front end. Does that make it more desirable or less?

a wide front won't turn near as sharp as a tricycle but for working in the woods (and mud), i'd want a wide front. both my 560s have wide front. whether the torque amp works or not, you can use the 560 in direct, and it will work just fine.

i have never touched my t/a lever, when i got it there were some questions i had to the previous owner and they said ,something was out in the drivetrain a t something or other, and i mentioned t/a and he said ya thats it , ,but turns out the clutch was slipping so i don't know if it does work or not.i don't use it for much other than moving snow and mowing so i don't have a need for it.and the wide front is a little more stable if you have a loader on it ,and if your in the hills you will want it.

Ken,
Interesting note. I think the wide front end would be better for my purposes too. I haven't even got to see if the clutch works yet. I just got it to turn over today and fired up for a minute or so. Im going to order a service manual to make sure I dont screw it up. Thanks for the help. Any additional sites I can go to for parts etc. would be appreciated. I just accessed BinderBooks and ordered serv. manual and parts manual.
