I've posted this over on the Paint and Bodywork Board but thought I'd post it here too.

I really don’t have but a very small heated area to work on my tractor parts this winter, but I would like to make use of some of my free time to try to get some things done.
I would like to be able to degrease, wire brush, sand blast and etc. some of the things like the starter, generator, seat, wheel weights and so on.
I want to use Dupont Centauri Acrylic Enamel as the final finish next spring/summer.
Since Epoxy primer needs to have the final finish applied soon after the primer, my question is: What should I do to protect the parts that I am working on until I can actually use epoxy primer in the spring? What can I prime them with as I work on them that will allow epoxy to be applied later without a lot of extra work and trouble?
I’ve talked some to the guy at the paint store, but I think most of the information that he is giving me is for a regular body shop that has all the space and time they need.
What do you guys do that have limited space and time?

Thanks !

I have never used the epoxy. I have had very good luck with Dupont 615/ 620 primer on bare metal. You mix half 615, half 620 then spray. You can even add a little more 620 to thin it a little more if necessary. You can even brush it. Once mixed you can't put it back in the can it came from. I sometimes put the remainder in a seperate sealed can to brush some small areas( The longer mixed after the first few hours the less good it is but I have brushed it a few days later on say a bolt with good results). The only drawback from using 615 and 620 is that it is intended for adheasion and not a fill primer. I usually give it 2 or 3 coats of 615/620, when it flashes off I then give it 2 or 3 coats of Dupont Imron. You could give it say 3 coats of 615 and 620, let it dry then scuff with a red pad in the spring then topcoat. I don't know if 615 and 620 is waterproof so I would keep the parts in a dry place so you don't get any light surface rust. If you need to use a fill primer, first use the 615 and 620 for adheasion (1 or 2 coats)let it flash off, then give it as many coats as needed to fill of Glasarite (I think the number is ) MS 285-22 waterproof fill primer. You can either let it dry until you are ready to paint in the spring, then sand it as smooth as glass, or when it flashes off, topcoat it. The only problem with the Glaserite is the cost$$$$$$. It is ok to mix these brands together.

I protect the metal with one quick coat of Epoxy Primer, then when I'm ready to paint, I scuff it up with a purple 3M pad, and reprime before painting. Check on the PPG OMNI urathane, as far as costs goes, you may decide to change.
