the difference between stepped head pistons and firecraters from ih or turbodomes from m+w is that the 'domed' piston causes more turbulance in the combustion chamber to promote more rapid combustion. the stepped head design just raises the compression. in my m+w liturature their test shows two more horsepower for their turbodomes over their steppedhead pistons.

Firecraters are an M&W piston. From the pics posted you can see that the firecrater has the rounded out step with a dish in the center. I have a set for a Farmall M that I replaced with the stepped head pistons from TISCO. I think the firecraters are more desireable.

Wrong. Firecrater pistons are an original IH part, available ONLY through IH dealers, still available today. Check out cngco.com under antique IH parts to buy the firecraters.

Step heads have been available from different manufacturers, TISCO has them and so does Pow'r Seal - which I used to rebuild my H.

M&W also made a step-head design which they called Turbo Dome. Here are the various pictures:

This is a generic step head piston, the name cast into it is "Conformatic" they have been around for quite a while.

Actually Perfect Circle, TRW, and Clevite made exact copies of the Firecrater pistons (in weight & design). Clevite actually made sets of firecraters that were superior to the IH sets for the H & 300, because they used the standard pin for these sets, not the smaller pin that requires the expensive wrist pin bushing set. I have not had the chance to see who produces the current firecrater pistons, but I am positive that it is not Zollner, the original manufacturer..

Thanks for the additional info, I thought only IH had firecraters. Maybe the other companies sold them cheaper?

The Conformatic is a design similiar to the M&W, there are also pistons that have just 1/2 of the piston stepped up with no cutouts...

I put two of them side by side mounted on the same pin and took a pic. It's in a pistons directory on photos.yahoo.com/srbheadlight . That piston was out of a 240, a set from a 230 I have only has half the dome hight.
