Well my PD-40 is finally running, after a 6 month search for injection pump parts. Now we're getting to some the the less critical items. Who can tell me about the thermostat on these engines? The parts list says it has one, and it would have to since it has a water pump and it would never warm up without one. Mine is missing, though, and I can't tell where it is supposed to go. The upper water elbow out of the engine doesn't have a groove or anything for it to mount into. There is a casting boss about 1" inside the water outlet hole in the engine block so it can't go in there, or if it does, the guts would have to extend out into the elbow. I have had no luck finding a NOS thermostat, is it the same as the one for an H or M? Has anybody crossed this to a NAPA number? Any and all help is appreciated, thanks, boy does that old long-stroke diesel sound cool when it's idling..... Brian

I don't remember seeing any requist for parts for the fuel pump. I may have had some. The thermostat is #33816D or 37634D. Try your IH dealer. It goes in the radiator inlet elbow just under the radiator.

33814D is also listed for the 40. I converted that to a STANT #S-343-H. Best plugs for you unit is Autolite #3077. Which head do you have, 45deg??

Carter and Grunewald crossed that later number to a 37634DA, which they had. This PD-40 is serial #701, a 1933 unit with a vertical injector head. Probably the 200th one made. Bought it from Lenny Ohnmeiss at the Red Power show in PA last summer. It's been a fun project. I didn't see any kind of groove or anything in the upper radiator elbow either, does the gasket just hold the thermostat in place?

My engine book shows it between the top part of the engine outlet elbow (above the hose) and the radiator inlet 4 bolt flange. I would have to go out & look at the parts from my TD35 to see where my therm. was. I can if you want me to tomorrow.I am looking at a crawler book as the PU book doesn't even show the radiator. What did you do about the head gasket or didn't you have the head off? No head gaskets are available that I know of. Denny is a great guy. I want to get up to his place & check out some of his stuff. What all did you have to do to get it running? Jere.

Thanks, I'll try the later part #, the dealers I tried did not have the earlier one and could not cross it to anything. I posted several requests in the classifieds for pump parts, I got several responses but none of them panned out to anything. Brian

I'm not sure, but it may use the type thermostat that fits inside the upper radiator hose like the in hose thermostats used on some early Ford V-8's.
