I have recently taken out the pistons on my cub because of the engine being locked up. What new parts should I buy besides new pistons and cylinder sleeves?

Thanks in advance.

Re Cub: Engine didn't come with sleeves, .010 inch honed over can maybe knurl piston skirt and new rings. slightly oversize 'service' rings if available best for use then. Cub piston sets with rings available .020 to .040 oversize advertised-need bore and hone job. Flathead engine, check valve seat area in block for cracks. As other stated check crankshaft and bearing area. Also check oil pump and oil channels. Head check- cracks and warped? RN.

This is a very interesting but difficult question to answer. First, what caused it to lock up? Have you had the crank miked? Is the cylinders scored to the point that you would need sleeves instead of boring and larger pistons? How about the valves? The front seal? Theres a lot more to it than just buying a bunch of new parts and putting them in an engine. I've rerung them for as little as $125.00 and rebuilt them for as much as $1265.00. Hopefully someone else can shed some more light on your question.

Tyler, Just about everyone that has worked on these old tractors will tell you that your question will very on every job you do. First based on how much your willing to invest! If you are wanting this tractor right, you should start with the wear on the crank and work your way up. It is at the very least, not as simple as we all would like. LOL ED

If you want to do it right I would recomend that you , have the bore on the block machined to oversize, replace the piston and rings, have a machine shop check the head and reface and or replace the valves and install hardened valve seats in the head. Have the machine shop grind the crankshaft and replace the main and rod bearings. I am sure that it would take a lot less than this to get it running again, But if you want it to run for another 30 years this would be the right way to do it ! If you need any help feel free to e-mail me at Mirgon@ohiohills.com. I would be happy to help !

Good luck
