Just got back from visiting my uncle's farm to track down granddad's 1937 F-30 that my uncle told me was sitting in the woods. I found it, complete with a sizable tree growing up through it. Kinda sad, been robbed of the radiator, steering wheel, one of the rear steel wheels, whatever the linkage was between the engine and transmission, mag, etc. It's ashame I didn't get to it sooner. Anyway, is there something taboo about removing the serial number plate from it? I took it off (in very good shape, SN FB23165) and have it sitting here, but I feel guilty about removing it.

I am lucky to have 2 Farmalls, 1 from each of my grandfathers. I am going to start on an M that was the last tractor grandfather bought and I have an 1939 F-20 that was my other grandfathers that has electric start and factory road gear but has a hole straight through the block. Going to find anther motor for that one when Im finished with the M. Since both my grandfathers are now gone it is a little part of then that will live on.

Peabody, I would suggest you re-attach that plate to the F-30 when you have it home and restored. Go for it. At least my Grandpa's H is in my barn now. Still don't have official ownership of it.

Why not bring it back to life? For some inspiration, check out our web site at www.oldoakfarmalls.com. Go to our F-30 page and read about a real sad tractor that is now quite happy.

I wish I could find my Grandpa's old tractor.
I've asked my Mother and Ants (no Uncles to ask) and they have no idear what happened to it or what kind it was. All I remember is that it was RED. I'll never see it again.

Peabody,
It sound like your tractor is in better shape than my grandfather's F-20 which I just finished restoring. It would be easier to list the parts I DID NOT have to replace then the parts that I did. It took me 5 years to get it done, but my cousins like seeing it, since we all played on it as kids. It was sitting outside for about 35 years and was like a parts tractor without any usable parts on it. But, since it WAS my grandfather's, it was worth restoring at any price. I will be working on his 1929 Regular, and am angling to try to buy back another of his Regulars that he sold off earlier before he died. Anyway, Your F-30 is not just any F-30, it is unique because it was your grandfather's F-30, and restored, it will be a family heritage heirloom. That kind of special history can not be bought for any price.

Peabody,
Sounds like my kind of tractor project. I'll cut the tree out, remove the wheel and give it to you and remove the carcass for my trouble :>).
Seriously, there may be a lot missing, but it's your granddad's. Pull that thing in the garage and get started looking for parts. It is far from hopeless. A lot of what you describe as missing is useless on a fencerow derelect anyway. I'd love to find one in that condition.

Don't feel guilty, you just saved the one remaing good part of your granddads tractor. If you hadn't taken it, someone else would have.
You need to get back out there and get that other rear steel wheel, those are a rather hot item.

Hmmm. Hadn't thought about it that way. Thanks. Anyway, the remaining wheel appears to be in excellent shape, but it's gonna take a chain saw to get it out. That's where the tree is growing. Both steel front wheels are intact. If I remember correctly, I can just about see the missing wheel being used as some type of weight on some of my uncle's equipment years ago. I will have to ask him about it. BTW, it's sitting next to a International KB-35 dump truck that is really shot.
