I ordered new bolts to clamp the cast center to the rear rims on my Super H from Pilot Knob Restorations. The man said the bolts were not painted from the factory and were the same color as the galvanized rims or were cadmium plated -- Is this correct?-- He also said the clamps themselves were galvanized or plated. I thought everything was supposed to be red. Your Letter Series book shows various combinations. Which is correct? I thought that if the clamp was attached to the rim it was rim color, if separate it was red.

CNKS,
For what it is worth. Stepped over 15 feet to my left (from the computer) to look at a circa 1956 color picture of my uncle's 1954 Stage-2 Super-M. He bought it new (I have the bill of sale) and I was never told of it being repainted in the four years he owned it. The bolts and clamps are all red. I am in the picture with the tractor at age 5. Bolts were plated. Think as the other fellow said the clamps were red, but I'd have to look at some photography.

Thanks, I hate painting bolts, however, to me it may look a little strange with cadmium bolts and red clamps, but not as strange as if the clamps were plated. There is a picture in your Letter Series book, of a Super HV with red clamps and silver bolts (p 79), same as a I4 on p 74, and there is a picture of a W4 on p67 with silver clamps and red bolts. I realize these are repaints and not originals. In most pictures in yours and other books, everything appears red.

I'm going to have to revise myself a little here: in the archival shots, the rear wheel clamps and bolts look to have been red, probably becaise they were painted while on the tractor. Front wheels seem to vary- some have painted bolts if they attached to clamps seperate from the rims, some don't have painted bolts if the loops are on the rims thenselves. Tale a look at the archival shots.
