I cleaned the carb again with a air gun, tightend down all manifold bolts, carb bolts, adjusted the fuel and air and timing with little success. i got it to run fine w/o a load on it but when we ground feed today at high rpm she started surges like a basterd. What could be the problem. I just did a complete overhaul of the engine, rebuilt the carb, new wires, plugs, router and all the rest in that area. i would like to hear some ideas. Thanks

My H did the same thing cleaned the carb new points etc. Look in the air breather to see if it does not have some water in it mine did enough to cause it to surge. dumped of the oil and water ran fine. dont know how it got there but it did.

Definitely replace the governor spring if it is old. Take the spring off and make sure the thruster bearing is sliding horizontally but not wiggling on the shaft. If it is wiggling on that shaft, replace that assembly. It is worn.

Jake,

I had a surging C this past week, and I found two problems that needed fixing: First, after repainting, the linkage arm from the governor to the carb wasn't clearing the block entirely, so it would stick when the governor threw the arm back to its max position. I had to do a little filing on the linkage arm to get it to move freely.

Second, my governor was out of adjustment. Got it adjusted and now she purrs.

Good luck,

- David

My 53 Super H used to do the same thing under a load. It was a worn out governor spring. Local Case IH dealer ordered one for me, and it wasn't that expensive. Makes a huge difference.

Check your intake valve settings. If they check as per spec, open them up a couple of .002.

Also if you can find nothing wrong with the carb check out the coil and condenser, seen it before, runs fine at idle and will not at power.

I agree with Bob, it might be time to take a look in the governor, lots of info on this in the archives.
