Curious if a light honing without installing fresh rings will be any problem. The rings look great and the sleeves look pretty good to. I just think a quick honing will clean them up(the tractor sat for many years).
Rings should reseat without problems?
My Farmall H has the M&W flat top piston with the oil scraper ring below the wrist pin.
Thanks,
Aaron

How much end gap do the rings have?
Should not be over .004" per 1" of cylinder diameter on a new ring. Use your feeler gauge to check it out. 4" X .004" = .016" max. end gap for new rings. Old rings will be more but should be about .030" or less to give some compression and oil control.
Old rings often don't look worn but have more end gap than is acceptable.

As Fred said, you may get lucky and everything will work out ok. But why take the chance. If the engine was stuck enough to require honing the cylinders then what is the shape of the rings? If one ring busts that is going to cost you more than a set of rings now. You already have the head and pan off. Why not do it right the first time?

Is that how you tell an M&W piston from another one? I noticed mine had the oil ring down at the bottom but since those were the first H pistons i have ever dealt with, i thought they were all like that.

I contacted Carter & Gruenewald Co Inc to inquire about the price of rings, and they informed me of the description.

To mention, I rebuilt Farmall M that had M&W Fire Crater pistons in it. All 4 rings were up top, but instead of a stepped head, it had a rounded step head.
I think if you did a search in the archives of this site, you may find pictures that identify M&W pistons.

I bought an H that was stuck very cheap a few months ago. I had to take the oil pan and head off to get it to turn but didn't know anything about the tractor so was unsure if it had other problems. When I got it moving I honed the cylinders with the pistons still in it just to clean them out a little. I thought I would see what it would need before I spent a lot of money on it. Got it back together and started it. Smoked like a freight train for about 10 minutes and has not smoked or used any oil since. It runs as good as any tractor I have seen so I suppose it will be good to go the way it is. We took it for a ride that was over 30 miles this summer and it never missed a lick. I got lucky this time you may also. Good luck.
