8 volt battery

A Farmall mechanic friend who has farmed with them for years suggested I replace my old 6 volt with an 8 volt for my M. He said the tractor would spin over and start quicker. Well, it does do that. Unfortunatley, even though we had the voltage regulator adjusted up to cut out at 9 volts, I don't run the tractor enough to keep the battery charged. The charging system has not been altered from original. What is the proper way to charge an 8 volt battery with a 6/12 volt charger?

I have charged mine with a 6 volt charger. Also have put it on 12 volts in the "trickle-charge" setting without problems. When charging any battery, it only takes a little too much voltage to cause some problems, so watch that ammeter on the charger! When the tractor is running, look at the ammeter and see if it is charging. If the ammeter needle is past 10 amps, your problem may be the battery, or something that's draining the battery when the tractor is off. The 6 volt generator is plenty capable of charging the 8 volt battery if the regulator is adjusted correctly. Cutting out at 9 volts may be a little low.
You're going to get grief from some people about not staying with 6 volts, and hear all the stories about starting their tractor with 6 volts at -30 degrees in a blizzard. In fact, I have started an M at -20 with 6 volts. In stock confuguration, with good cables and conections, they will start. HOWEVER, once they've been "tweaked" with high compression pistons and pushed into the 50+ horsepower range, turning them over with 6 volts, warm or cold, can be a challenge. The 8-volt will spin it fine.

For what you spent on the 8 volt battery you could have gotten the 6 volt system to work fine. My Super A starts excellent with the 6 volt system. I did the same thing a couple of tractors ago and after the electrical system was done up to snuff I went back to 6 volt and it wotked great. It was designed to work on 6 volts and will.

Charge on 6 volt side. I like have to charge my 8 volt at times. Don,t use it enough to keep it charged.
